New member-sussex and a friend that's has huge issues-triumph dealer no help.

Basically-cold start no probs
Warm-bad slow cranking no start.
With a jump from a car no issues.
Battery has been replaced 3 times.
Triump originally said its starter-no it's not.
I got called on as the guy fed up with triump aftercare.
So I read up about possibly coolant issues.
Dumped the coolant-dirty brown colour.
From cold starts fine-warm it up and if you turn it off then try to restart it turns over once and gives the impression of a flat battery or a partially seized engine.
Jump from a car and it fires straight up.
Used a test meter and the battery ain't charging.
So you can all guess which bike it is.
It's a speed triple 675 on a 15 plate.
Here's what I have found.
R/R reading as follows-tested at idle
Pin1-2----26.8volts ac
Pin 2-3-----24.6 volts ac
Pin 1-3----21.4 volts ac.
But readings are not steady they fluctuate around these voltages.
Same test but at 5000rpm
Pin 1-2----90 volts ac
Pin 2-3----100 volts ac
Pin 1-3----110volts ac
Should it NOT go above 70 volts ac.
Readings from stator plug only.
Second test.
Test pins 1 to 3 with + and - on the r/r only and I get readings on the positive but got no readings on the negative.
So my questions are.
Is the stator and the r/r fried or is it just the stator.
When the stator plug is unplugged for testing and you run the engine it will only run for a short while then dies.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated as I cant get any accurate info from triumph on the limits for readings for both stator and r/r.

To test a stator you want to check resistance between the 3 coils, should all be around 0.2-0.5 ohms. You also want to test each coil to make sure it is not grounded to the frame. Do these tests with the bike off. Also if your coolant is a dirty brown color, it is likely getting mixed with the oil. That could mean your waterpump seal is bad, or possibly a leaking head gasket which may cause your engine to lock up because of coolant in the combustion chamber.

The coil
Did that and had no reading to bike frame
It was over limit on the meter indicated by OL on the meter, the meter is a digital auto range with selectable volts,ohms,diode and continuity ac/DC selectable.
The coolant didn't contain oil as no oil was present it was just a dirty colour, bit like weak tea without milk.
The one reading I did get that was accurate was on diode test all three phases read 0.42 to the + of the r/r but OL on the negative. If I swap the red and black cable round for the meter and place the red on the neg of r/r then I got 0.92 on diode test for each phase but nothing on the positive .
Just a little confused as to what's actually playing up.

This is exactly what happened with me, after I replaced the stator with cheap chinese one. If you leave it until the engine is cold, it will start again no problem.

Not yet, this weekend I'll try to swap the stator, and let you know, really weird issue,

When warm and difficult to start, you can try to open the throttle up sometimes it works.

Your problem sounds similar to my past 3 months: After going through 5 batteries, a Voltage Regulator, and Stator (I gave up self repairing here), it ended up being the Starter. It would cold start fine, but when hot required a ton more current. It took the shop several rounds to conclude this. My bike is now running (and starting) great.

I have just found out it's a street triple r on a 13 plate.
So could make a difference to solving the issues this thing has.

@Conspiers many thanks for the info, it's indeed the starter motor, when hot and unable to crank, I just took a piece of wood or rubber mallet and hit it hard, it runs beautifully now. ;)

Well the guy bought a new starter motor and fitted it and problem was still there.
So he took it back and got his money back.
It's a voltage issue but cannot define if its stator or reg/rectifier.
No one seams to be able to give the limit specs for reg/rectifier.
Triumph customer care are next to useless and I personally wouldn't buy one
I like my jap bikes too much
Here's hoping I can resolve the issue.

Here is a tip, any time you go to replace a starter motor, make sure the starter clutch is working properly. Stick your finger in the hole and the gear should turn free and smooth one way but not the other. If the gear does not turn then your starter clutch is shot and it will just ruin the new starter.

I did also replace my Voltage Regulator and Stator prior to the starter, probably unnecessarily, but maybe multiple components had issues. I will say that my voltage regulator was all ready replaced once prior under recall and it is a known problem for these bikes. If it hasn't been done on the bike you are working on it would be high on my list. Also a pretty easy job and I picked up the part online easily.

Awesome, I'm glad to be of help after the hours and months of frustration I went through. Unfortunately SpeedTriple675 is still battling the machine.

After going through a tank of gas since my starter was replaced, my bike failed to start after I made a quick stop home today. It wouldn't crank at all. I swapped the battery and it fired right up. (Sigh) back to the shop next chance I get.

Stator doesn't charge the battery?

When holding the RPM up into the range (2500? I forget the number in the repair guide), the voltage does climb, appearing that the stator is charging at that RPM. The shop that has the bike said they did analysis and did not expect the stator, at least not so far. As far as what happens in between revving the bike at a stand still and what happens during a 30 minute ride, I couldn't say. Which is my next puzzle piece: I think it's worse than "Not charging", it drains the battery. I can go out with a fully charged battery and in ~15 minutes, turn off bike, key on, the bike is unable to start. This was attributed to bad starter when hot theory, but now I've got a new starter and a dead battery. Would a 'non charging' stator cause the battery to deplete that fast?

Get a cheap voltage meter, and connect it to the battery terminal, check it during the ride. It will tell you a lot.
