New to this site so mods feel free to move this post to wherever it belongs. I found this site by searching for Street triple info and had pretty much decided that one would be my next bike. Now, apologies because this might be long winded, but during my internet brousing I've come across a crashed 06 st locally for what looks like a good price. This got me to thinking I could save some dollars and maybe end up with a pretty good speed triple type of bike. Haven't even been to see the bike yet so this is all theory so far but lets say the fairing etc is stuffed and I want to go for the naked look. I'd be shopping ebay and triumph for the parts I need and taking my time. Opinions anyone? could it be a worthwile project or should I just wait and go for a street triple when they get enough to actually be on the floor?
Pros for me:
20 litre tank
cheap to buy initially
luggage comes with it
Cons:
Haven't looked at it yet so could be a bucket
Heavy, 210kg dry, maybe some will be lost on the naked conversion
Finding bits for the right price.

OK, basically thought I would just post here and get more knowledgeable opinions, tell me what you think?

Best of luck with that. My '02 is a bit different, but it looks pox without the fairings. Plain steel headers and pipes and crap everywhere. Parts costs are frightening, and your target machine has a relatively high value for wrecking. I personally doubt that if an economical result is what you are after that this is the way to go. Maybe if you had a donor bike for the parts you need???

If the nudie bike concept is all you are after, they have been building the Speed Triple for a while now...

Welcome to the forum Doc59. There have been a few 05 onwards models streetfightered - one here in Brisvegas.

As Dave said, have a look at the links. There is heaps of info there to be had.

The ST frame is very different to the S3 and the HP is down a little too but it would still make a great base.

The Triumph parts are REALLY expensive but some parts are available on Fleabay and some wreckers. Liverpool M/C wreckers in NSW are pretty good and specialise in Triumph bits.

Good luck with it all.

Thanks for the replies and the links, I should have searched a little more too. I'm still inclined to wait for a Street Triple but was viewing this as more of a project and building my own bike, not really as a money saving exercise. I also like the look of the muffler setup on the ST over the Speed/Street. Here's a link to the bike on ebay (at the risk of someone else bidding).

It would definately need a good look over first and would only be economical as a naked or a track bike, thats if the non running issue is something simple too. Opinions from the more knowledgeable???

The guy had it on ebay over a month ago and it didnt sell, I think he had $5000 on it then.
I did ring him about it and he told me that it was a mates who owed him money so he agreed to take the bike instead of cash.
It was allegedly crashed into a parked car at low speed when a spider crawled out of his mates jacket (thats what he told me)
I did my sums and it came out pretty expensive to fix (front end damage etc). I did offer the guy $3000 but he didnt respond.
Because i couldnt inspect the bike I had to expect the worst with the front end damage but if its local you should at least have a look at it.
Give me first option on the luggage though :D:D

Go for it

Doc for $4000 , that's a lot of bike with a sweet low km. triple.

I have a few bits and pieces that might help you get started on it from my first attempt at a naked.

Can give you a hand if you need it, I'm in Bardon and you can come and check out how to relocate the relays , computer ect. ect.

OK, going to have a look at it tomorrow and then I'll decide.

Gravy:- same story when I spoke to him, definately worth my while having a look by the sound of it. As for the luggage, I have a dislike of side opening panniers so might let you have first dibs on them. Being an old bugger though I prefer top boxes over a backpack so I'd be looking at keeping that.

STRider:- If I do end up geting the bike I"ll take you up on that. I liked the look of your first attempt and I'd like to see your bike in the flesh, you've done some good work there. New to Triumphs and modifying new bikes/streetfighters so working out where to hide stuff would be great. I'm in Jindalee so just down the road too.

Another downside is I'm in the middle of restoring my z650 so one would have to suffer :-(

Got ideas

Doc , just had a good look at the bike on ebay .

You could have that back on the road it 2 to 3 weeks .All the bits are there. Just need to make a new top fairing to hold the sprint lights and clocks , then use a mini lower fairing like I used to finish it off. (slightly different of course, cant have 2 the same )

Good luck bidding.

Not quite as easy as that I'm afraid, had a look at it today. The front end is pretty trashed, dash and headlights are stuffed. Top fairing and mounting bracket are broken and the lower fairings sound similar to yours with the tabs broken off etc. The mileage is wrong, I'd estimate it at somewhere between 10 and 20,000 km. Rear subframe is probably twisted slightly too. I'm still tempted, depending on it's insurance state. Thinking it might be worth it if I took time and waited for cheap Speed Triple instruments etc. Someone on this forum has done the instrument conversion from what little I've read. First time I've seen all the relays, computer etc. If I do end up with it I'll definately be picking your brains on how to hide them STRider. Anyway, what's popular opinion, would I be throwing my money away????

Addition to the above post. The non running is another problem. Bike turns over quietly and smoothly on the starter. The dash was unplugged at the time so would this have any affect on the starting? Do these things have a tilt sensor that might be causing it? Advice from anyone that has dropped their Sprints before as to what would cause it not to start would be appreciated.

Bummer about the cluster and lights , got my gauges on uk ebay for $150 .

never started mine without the gauges plugged in so can't help there .

My bike would not start ,but turned over , a new battery solved the mystery after checking everything else . Batteries have to be in top condition in these bikes or they won't start. Also if the plugs have been fouled up it can make them very hard to start

Be happy to help you out ,my rear sub frame twisted back easy with a bit of heat and a big bar .

Hi Doc, I priced up the bike to fix when I first looked at it and I probably would have paid $3000 for it at the time.
I discovered Triumphs are more expensive to repair than a jap bike and unfortunately this one has expensive front end damage (forks, instruments, headlight, front rim? etc). If your looking at building a street fighter then your probably best to find a bike with mostly fairing damage as you will be removing the fairings any way.
Although I reckon the guy will be pretty desperate to turn the bike into cash before xmas so you could get it pretty cheap!!!
If the bike doesnt sell on ebay make the guy a stupid offer you never know.
Lets know how you go.
Cheers Gravy

Rang Triumph today just to get an idea on new parts prices, just asked about a speed triple dash and a sprint computer. Now I definately understand why people complain and there are naked sprints around. Speed dash - $2250, Sprint ECU - $3500. I mustn't have looked hard enough at the bike because I didn't notice the hand carved solid gold computer anywhere :). A stuffed computer is probably a worse case scenario and it's more likely a sensor or maybe battery as STRider mentions. If I do end up with it, I'll definately be waiting for ebay bargains, a brand new Speed Triple dash just sold in the UK for 175 pounds (not quite as good a bargain as yours ST). Anyway, see what happens and I'll let you know here.

Oh yeah - the forks and front rim seemed fine. The rear subframe was hardly noticeable and would be an easy fix.

Bidding has ended for this item

Hey Doc ,

No one bid . Everybody knows what triumph parts are worth in Aussi.

My dash had 22,000 km on it !

Doc there was a guy in germany (about 2 years ago ) that Wrecks triumphs and used UK ebay to sell his bits. He had quite a few dashes when I was looking, at good prices.

Maybe a UK or German member can help track him down .

If your still interested it it
Offer him $ 3250 while showing him a full list of all the parts needed to restore the bike , with a grand total at the bottom . It will be thousands. Or just show him the price for the dash .

All my bits and pieces came from the States or the UK , I walked out of our triumph dealer when my list reached $6000 and we were only getting started .

If you have some patience , the bits show up on ebay eventually:)

Be nice to start it before you bought it . (fully charged Car battery , jumpers , set of plugs , and plug the dash in.) if it starts you know you dont need the hand carved solid gold computer.

Doc dont look at new parts.
As ST has said use good old ebay and one of the wreckers search engines where you type in what parts you are looking for and then they reply to you with prices etc. There is a shop here in Melbourne that sell alot of Triumph parts www.Eurobrit.com.au I think they are.
The plastics can be welded and new tabs can be made and welded on. You would be suprised what can be fixed.
Offer the guy $2500, he has had it on ebay twice now and it hasnt sold so I reckon he might be getting desperate.

Gravy - shhhh, the Triumph prices were just so I would have an idea and for bargaining power, don't let all the secrets out. I might be trying STRiders tactics. After researching, my biggest worry is the not starting, if it ran I actually think the asking price is pretty good. Thanks to both of you for all the advice and I'll let you know if anything eventuates. Otherwise, I could be on the Street triple forum next year :)

$4000 is the bottom line at the moment. Asked him to give me a call if he could get it running and I'll have another look.
