With a pro-longed period off the road a couple of issues (the bile is a 2005 but low mileage):

1. The battery drains really quickly even with no alarm switched on? despite charging it seems to die within days - does this need to be replaced?

2. Before the battery fades I get the engine to turnover but no firing? Is this the spark plugs - if so are there any quick fixes or on-line guides (I dont have a manual.....)

Obviously I am no tech-head so any help is great!!

If it is draining really quickly with no alarm you may have an electrical fault on the bike - see if you can isolate the cause before buying a new battery ...

or at least confirm there is no battery drain going on, by measuring it.

Well, for starters, it is very common for Triumph triples to be hard to start when cold. It is addressed in many of the forums on this site. Some people say its the additives in the fuel and the high compression that cause it, some have other ideas. But it is fairly common when the bikes are cold.
As for your battery draining, my first question would be, how old is it? I dont see the year of your bike posted, but is it original? is it more than 3-4 years old? Old batteries dont retain much of a charge to begin with and even less so during the winter months.
I had a similar issue with my Sprint 2 years ago, and even when i kept it on the battery tender every day it wouldnt last a week when it was off. New battery, problem solved.
On the flip side, my Daytona has a brand spankin new battery in it and it hasn't needed to be charged once this winter(although I should have). I started it last friday after sitting more than 2 months and even with the cold starting issues it had plenty of juice.
