Hi everyone!
So last week I decided to take the plunge and sell my first bike, a Buell Blast (basically a single cylinder Harley Davidson Sportster engine on a naked bike). Now i'm in the market for a new bike and in my price range (under $3500) I seem to keep seeing a lot of Triumphs that look amazing compared to a lot of ragged out Japanese middle weight supersports.

After looking around I'm kind of stuck between two Triumphs I've found locally, a 1999 Daytona 955i and a 2002 Speed Triple 955i. Both have a little over 20k miles, look to be taken care of, and have new tires and recent services (although neither say what was actually serviced).

What things should I be looking for when I look at these bikes? What should I expect in terms of maintenance and upkeep, both in time and cost?

I had 2 years of riding on the Buell (although only about 2000 total miles) and have about 4-5 years of experience messing around on 70's small displacement enduro bikes. Will the 955i engine be too powerful for me?

Thank you everyone for humoring my many questions! With all luck I should be riding a Triumph very soon!

...welcome. Here's a little tip for ya. This is the welcome forum where we say hi. You will need to go to the appropriate forum for questions.
Which sub-forum would these questions be better suited for, as it's not quite specifically a Speed Triple question or a Daytona, it's a little mix of both (and I didn't see a 955i engine specific sub-forum). Compared to the automotive forums I am a member on, this website seems to be just a little bit more difficult to navigate through.

Well, you may first decide what you want the bike for. In the Sport and Touring area, you will find lots of info on the Sprints, older bikes like mine, and then wander over to "TWINS" to visit the eccentric cousins who like two cylinders instead of three and just prefer cruising around. And of course our Tiger cousins with the capable Tiggers....on or off road.

Where are you in NC? I'm near the Greensboro airport...several other Triumph riders in this area as well, and quite a few NC riders are on the forum. I've seen several tempting offers on Craigslist as of late, but no space left unless I can get the wife to sell the cage and start riding.

Welcome to the madhouse....!

I'm in Charlotte. South Charlotte until August when I move into my new apartment across from the University in North Charlotte!

Looking for a bike mainly for a fair weather daily driver and fun weekend toy! A bike that I could commute a few miles to college and back during the week and then take a trip to the mountains on the weekend if I was so inclined. I posted a thread in the Speed Triple area and from talking to those guys, seems like I need to go and sit on / test ride a Daytona, Speed Triple, and a Sprint. Previously I was pretty set on either a Daytona or Speed Triple and thought the sprint was a bit larger bike than I wanted, but I think simply seeing one in person and sitting on it couldn't hurt. I think I'm going to avoid the cruiser style bikes for now, having earlier considered a Harley and my uncle (avid Harely guy, owned like 40+ in his 50ish years of riding!) talked me out of looking at a sportster 883. Tigers seem interesting to me, as theres a few on craigslist locally, but not something I really want for my next bike.

Lots of bikes on the Charlotte Craigslist...if I had an extra $3000, I would get that Tiger that was listed. There were a couple of Americas and Speedmasters on some of the NC lists at reasonable prices. I'm up/down 24/27 more than anything....have a customer out near Locust.

Hope you find something you like!!
