i'm sure i saw a thread not long ago that discussed setting the clearance by the number of turns out rather than using feelers, but do you think i can find it now? no is the short answer
appreciate it if anyone can provide a link or remind me of the protocol
thanks

Hi Rory,

setting the clearance by the number of turns out rather than using feelers,
Depends how accurate you want the clearances to be ...

Assuming standard 5/16"-26 adjusters:-

. the calculation for the inlet is 0.002 / ((1 / 26) / 360) = 18.72 degrees of a single turn;

. the calculation for the exhaust is 0.004 / ((1 / 26) / 360) = 37.44 degrees of a single turn;

. because:-

.. "0.002" or "0.004" are the desired clearances;

.. "26" is the turns per ("1") inch;

.. "360" is the number of degrees in a complete turn ...

:whistle:

Hth.

Regards,

Some say that this method eliminates any 'uneven' valve stem wear which will affect the measurement if using feeler gauges.

it will mostly correct for where the ends of the adjuster screws dig holes into the end of the valves.

i use mushroom adjusters and the valve tips stay in pretty good shape. but the mushroom surface itself doesn't stay perfectly smooth.
