Hi guys,

I posted a while back about the Sprint stalling. I thought it was fixed when someone suggested checking the tank vacumm lines. All was well for a while until this Sunday....

I took a quick ride around town Saturday with no issues (except took some effort to start). Sunday I have go in for work, I start her up and get ready for a few minutes. Same as last time, I hit the on-ramp, rev up, and as soon as I pull the clutch in and shift it stalls on me.

I pull over, and restart her (turn off the ignition). I get it to stall a few more times so I head home and take the car :( I come home later and replicate the stalling again. Not always but most of the time if I rev it high and let go it will drop below 1000 rpms and either come back up or stall. So the idle is funky.

One time I reved it up to 6k (in neutral) and let go of the throttle and it sounded like I turned the ignition off....just stalled. I also tried rev'ing it with the gas cap open, same result.

I hook up the TuneBoy and see no error codes. I couldn't figure out how to use the logging feature (it was greyed out). And that's as far as got. After I put the TuneBoy away the bike couldn't start anymore. I suspect a really weak battery because the lights would go out and it barely crank. I left it to trickle charge overnight.

Symptons:
-Idle drops below 1,000 (above 500) on rev's at operating temp.
-Stall's about 50% of the time when throttling and letting go.
-Bike hadn't been used for the past 1 - 2 weeks except Saturday and Sunday.
-Stalled with gas cap open.

I've read about other people's stalling problems...and narrowed it down to:
-Maybe a weak/bad battery? This was my first guess since it's the original one.
-Pinched vacuum
-Bad IAC valve and/or IAC hoses (where is this on a RS?)
-Improper CO levels
-Pinched throttle body hoses

Is there anything specific I can at using the TuneBoy? I haven't used it before last night.

Thanks again :)

edit: This is probably the last week that PA is going to see the 60's (F)...so I REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY want to fix her up :-D

I had a similar problem last spring, my rs would die occasionally on closing the throttle,I had the bike remapped at the dealer and its be fine since. but it sounds like you need a new battery so may start there first. then you can at least rule that out
good luck

I'd be willing to bet it's the battery. Nine times out of ten when you have weird electrical issues, which is what this sounds like, it's the battery. The fact that yours was dead and it's the original battery anyway pretty much confirms that.

I had an identical problem with my 01 ST. The 'stepper motor' had gummed up and was sticking, not always but occasionally. It was fixed quickly and easily with some carb cleaner. I`d suggest you do a search of this forum for 'stepper motor' it seems to be problem that has cropped up in the past, with the 99-02 ST`s and RS`s.

Quick update............I threw in the new battery after charging (floater) overnight. Everything seeemed ok, but after a few minutes I noticed the Check Engine light on.

I stop the bike, plug in the TuneBoy and see the following:
P0230 Fuel Pump Relay Fault
P1231 Fuel Pump Relay Open Circuit

Tune in use: 010156

I reset the codes, restart the bike and let her warm up. At around 150*, I rev her up and notice again the low idle when I let go of the throttle. This time at higher revs it seemed like it stalled before the tach had time to reach 1,000 rpm area....meaning it seemed like it stalled like when I let off the throttle with a whinning noise from the starter after the engine died.

I'm starting to lean towards the stepper motor, but could the faults indicate maybe the relay is bad? How much is a stepper motor anyways?

Sigh :(

HI Iggy,
Bike bandit has steppermotors for 104.57$ us,i think its quicker to get parts through a triumph dealer.and hope fully some one on the site has an idea of what the error codes from your tune boy mean, cause it could be somthing different, but steppermotors were a known fault on 02s ,at least at my dealer ,mine was suspect, but just a remap cured it

just to throw another possiblility into the mix, I just went through the stalling issue with my RS, and it turned out to be a leaking intake manifold gasket. Spraying carb cleaner around the gasket stopped the stalling issue (i.e. it was sucking in flammable gas rather than air), which gave the game away.
Good luck!

Something to remember about tuneboy which they don't explain very well. Once you license it to that ECU, it stays ECU. If you sell the bike or total it, you are out 150 bucks for the license. There is no way to reclaim it. The product is top notch but their business practice sucks in my opinion. Just an FYI.

That is true.....the previous owner was cool enough to give me the cable, key, serial/usb adaptor, and usb cable for cheap. I figure if I have to use it a few times then it's paid itself off.

Quick update.......

I took for a quick spin after work today. It didn't stall (I wasn't trying either), but I noticed that if I rev it up, then completely let go of the throttle, the bike seems to 'want' to die....it doesn't, but it feel like a hitting a wall, and once I'm on the throttle again it's happy.

Even in 5th gear on the highway I've noticed letting off the throttle the bike seems to slow down rapidly. My suspision is on the stepper motor now. Since the throttle body is mostly closed when I release the throttle, it seems like the valve isn't getting enough air to the engine and hence the hesitation.
