Hello people,
after scouring the net for days i thought id best sign up to a decent triumph forum to pick peoples brains before i put my head through the laptop.

My dillema is i took a restricted test 18 months ago ( couldnt get the 3 days off at the time to do DAS) so been riding restricted bikes. Now i just bought a 1999 T595 Daytona (great bike!!!) with 6 months of restriction left.

You can see where im going with this already. I was just going to forget it and plod gently for a few months but i keep thinking the `what if` some burk pulls out on me and bye bye insurance. Plus its a nippy bike to get used to so it may be wise.

Now ive been reading allsorts about the law on restrictors and cant see why i should pay for an FI International kit (looking at £250 fitted) when theres such a grey area over if you need the certificate. Ive just phoned some dealers and they push this kit on you but when i ask if they would fit a second hand kit they just say it would be no good cos you have no certificate to give police etc.Ask them the law on the certificate and you get a vague grunt.

Now ive looked on ebay and you can buy a certificate for about 20 quid so whats going on here? My first port of call is to find a restrictor kit. I asked triumph (who no longer make restrictors for this model but can get one for 200 quid?) to buy a drawing of the kit so i can make one but it got me nowhere. Im an engineer so can make these things but know nothing about bike engines so maybe theres another way to get it below 33bhp?

Any advice on this subject is welcomed. Id feel more comfortable with the kit in so anyone with one for sale please let me know! Im trying to resist paying out on an FI kit but reluctantly may have to.

Ill go back to chainsmoking while i deliberate on the problem.

Get 3 washers that are large enough in diameter(about 35mm) and that have an inside diameter of about 6mm. Loosen off the exhaust manifold and slip them between the block and manifold. This will restrict the flow of exhaust. You may have to experiment with different sizes of washers to dial in your newfound power, or lack thereof.

Don't laugh, this is what Yamaha does to their 80cc dirt bikes, to accomodate young new riders. Then when the kids are ready for a little more power, you pull out the washers.

disclaimer: I take no responsibility whatsoever for damages that may occur to your bike, and/or ego.

I just had a zxr750 which was restricted but whipped up to 80 in what felt like no time and got to over 100 with little pain. I thought whats the point in restriction when i can do this? Id assume the daytona would still do 115 top end restricted and, being one of these silly gits who wants to keep his license, wouldnt mind not being able to get to 150 mph.

I see the angle with the washers mate but if anyone has some more specific dimensions it would be great. I am to motorbike engines what piles are to leicester picket so i dont want to keep stripping bike and trying different shapes/sizes if poss. Isnt there one that just attaches to throttle to restrict it,or did i imagine this simple way out?

Ill start another thread soon where the other 50% of me is thinking why bother  .

Midlifecrisis, I'm a big fan of innovation over money spending...go get a lead fishing sinker that'll go over the throttle cable, crimp it tight to limit RPM to about 5K. If you get stopped for any reason you'll be able to demonstrate your 'restrictor'.

I sat my bike test on the restriction and while that was a few years ago things dont seem to have got any clearer.

No one ever asked me to prove that my bike was restricted, neither DVLA nor Insurer, the insurance company doesnt care whether its restricted or not because if they charge you for the bike they make more money.

All of the research i done at the time suggested there was no need to have a certificate documenting that your bike is restricted, this is something that has been create by Fi International who have a pseudo monopoly on the kits.

The key is to make sure that the bike meets the BHP/KW restriction and power to weight ratio because the only way the police can check is to have the bike inspected or stick it on a Dyno. The only times i have heard of it being tested they popped it on a Dyno.

So, you can either:
1 - get it on a dyno and play about with the DIY solutions above
2 - not use a dyno and play with the DIY solutions, i'd say you'd want to be err ont he side of caution if you do this
3 - buy a restricor kit off ebay
4 - break the law and hope you dont get caught

For the last one remember that if you get too many points on your license in the first few years they revoke it and make you sit the test again.

Hope this helps.

Jamie.

hehe ye *sigh* . If i get the design of this kit ill post it here to help anyone in the same position. FI buy from alpha technik in germany. Ive ran their website through google translator but doesnt translate enough to price one up. Anyone with any german speaking skills? Ill assume they sell them a lot cheaper than the £173 from FI (trade price and pre installation) . Anyway ill phone some brokers , maybe they have found a couple in their time. Thanks lads and if anyone digs one out ill buy!!

sounds like trouble, but it may be possible to use Tuneboy to restrict the fuel that the ECU will give the engine...
You wouldn't want to restrict the fuel - that would cause big problems if running lean!

What you could do however is just adjust the rev limit fuel shut-off - lower the redline until you reach the hp limit.
Even without a dyno, you could view other dyno charts and make a pretty good assessment at what rpm the cut off would need to be.
Would be below 5K rpm though I suspect

To be honest however I'm not sure if really practical to run this bike at 33 hp

If you did go that route, your Tuneboy would not be a throw-away when restriction period is up - then you can use it to optimize the tune on your motor, especially if you add exhaust etc. Also is a very useful diagnostic tool.

Thanks for the thoughts lads. I did read somewhere theres a module to replace the ecu to take it to 33bhp but i dunno. Maybe someone can enlighten me on what a tuneboy is?

The sight that sells the restrictor kit is www.alphatechnik.com . To reiterate im after a 33bhp restrictor for a 1999 daytona 955i . Also if they post to england with postage? If you could work that one out id get it on and dyno it and of course be most grateful!

Your Triumph uses a Sagem ECM that has capability to be reprogrammed - A Triumph aficionado in Oz.,Wayne MacDonald, developed a software utility/interface called Tuneboy to read/write to the ECM. You can find all about it here
As I suggested, a very simple method you could employ to restrict to 33hp would be to simply change the rpm limit using that tool - the feature allows you to cut all fuel at a specific rpm.

Midlife - I'm at work and cannot access the website above because of !#@[email protected]#% 'network security restrictions' but I will attempt to do so this evening when I get home and will translate as best I can the info you are seeking. Thanks in advance for your patience.

No worries mate. On a sidenote this is a great bike and nippy as hell but something didnt feel right. Ive taken the baffle out the scorpion exhaust on it and now and it sounds great. I guess i couldnt put my finger on it but it was sounding like a sewing machine.

The tuneboy may be an idea ill keep in mind, at least it can be sold on after im done with it. If i wasnt 6`2" and 15 stone id have gone with a smaller 33hp bike for a while but id look like a mating frog.

Heads-up - Tuneboy is is a fabulous product but not a good re-sellable commodity - the significant value is in the 'key' which is specific to one ECM only - once registered and enabled for that ECM it is non-applicable for any other without buying a new 'key' for that other bike. Besides, the products real value would actually come into its own AFTER you are able to move beyond de-restriction. It's intent is not for the purpose of restriction, just that it could be used in that regard.

If the tuneboy helps make this beast faster i dont think ill need it. I opened her up for the first time yesterday and meant to overtake a couple cars but flew past six or seven, was like hitting a nitro button. Will have to treat this bike with respect cos its a nippy one to say the least.
