In the days when Britpop was dominating, The arrogant and self obsessed ‘Oasis‘ were squaring up to the Arty farty and condescending ‘Blur’, both thinking they were battling for being top of the Britpop tree, there was a a strange band from Sheffield that were outclassing both of them, the odd but brilliant ‘Pulp’.
Sadly their hansome and tallented Bass player Steve Mackey died today-RIP.
Forehead Nose Cheek Smile Head

here are two songs, my favorite, the odd and somewhat disturbing ‘Babies’

and their best known ‘Common People’

Edit, I just noticed the censorship, here is a proper version:

Sorry to hear that, and sorry I never knew about them. I enjoyed both Oasis (in the beginning, haha), and Blur (and Gorillaz). Saw Oasis a number of times, and saw Gorillaz a number of years ago with full orchestra et. al. at Madison Square Garden. That was one heckuva concert. RIP, Mr. Mackey.

Hi Speedmaster,
while we are in that era:
maybe I was a bit harsh on Blur and Oasis, here are some favourite tracks:
A warning about indiscriminate anal sex at the time Aids clashed with club 18/30 culture.

I know this was from their coke addled era and not from their two classic first albums but I like it (maybe because Liams not singing😊).

Bonus track is Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz
purportedly about taking Ecstasy.

I skipped most of the above^^^^just a little bit too arty and not enough substance maybe, I don't know, just didn't grab my attention I guess.
These guys from the same sort of era, however I did enjoy:

Speaking of those who 'passed on,' jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter died yesterday or Wednesday. While I never saw him in person, I was fortunate to have friends in my 20s who were into jazz (and a range of interesting music) and got me to see a half dozen or so famous musicians, from Steve Lacey to Tito Puente. I really feel fortunate about that - to see and hear these pros at work is a fantastic experience. This is true for any genre.

On a very different note ... I teach at a university and I often 'warm up' my class with some music that's probably weird to their ears. But recently a student recommended Machine Girl ... which apparently is in the 'break core' genre (***?). Listening to it the first time it nearly sounds like noise. After another time or two you start to pick out sounds and influences that actually pretty cool. See what you think.

Hi Trident,
Joy Division are something exceptional, I think of them as the greatest band to come out of the UK.
However the British music scene moves exceptionally fast, blink and a genre has come and gone. There was 17 years between Joy Division (76) and the Britpop scene (93-96).
Britpop was definitely came down on the side of ‘pop’ rather than ‘rock’, but it did have something to say And had it’s moments. It was introspective in the culture and nuances of our little island, I don’t think it was universally understood.

I was saving this for tomorrow but it seems appropriate now, the Britpop scene started to drift off with nonentity bands hanging on it’s coatails (Travis, Feeder, etc.).
Below is the band that swept the Britpop scene away with a video that was disturbing in it’s intensity the first time it was shown was a real Wot the Fukc moment, a new era had started.
This is poignant as the Dancer, charismatic singer, super nice guy, motobike enthusiast and rider (he had his own IOM race team), he had a pub in Pleshey, Essex called The Leather Bottle, turn up on a bike and chat for hours. On the mantlepiece was a charity box for the fines he imposed if you mentioned ‘Firestarter’ while he was lighting the log fire.
Sadly Keith Flint killed himself 4 years ago tomorrow (4th March 2019).

It would have been this guys birthday yesterday

Ive never made the RG Festival in Ballyshannon, but frequented the Trad Music Festival there for a few years. A great weekend
I have from his original band copies of ‘Taste’ (not brilliant) and ‘On the boards’ (great) on vinyl, they are hard to find.
I gave up on Rory when he would not stop putting that stupid hose in his mouth.

great guitarist.

Standing on the deck watching my shadow stretch
The sun pours my shadow upon the deck
The waters licking round my ankles now
There ain't no sunshine way way down
I see the sharks out in the water like slicks of ink
Well, there's one there bigger than a submarine
As he circles I look in his eye
I see Jonah in his belly by the campfire light
See the albatross up in the windy lofts
He gets to beating his wings while he sleeps it off
I hear the jettisoned cries from his dreams unkind
Gets to whippin' my ears like a riding crop
The captain once as able as a fink dandy
He's now laid up in the galley like a dried out mink
He's laying dying of thirst and he says or I think
Well, we're gonna be alone from here on in
Well you are all my brothers, and you have been kind
But what were you expecting to find?
Now your eyes turn inwards, countenance turns blank
And I'm floating away on a barrel of pain
It looks like nothing but the sea and sky remain
I sing na na nana nananana na
Na na nana nananana na
A harpoon's shaft is short and wide
A grappling hook's is cracked and dry
I said, why don't you get down in the sea
Turn the water red like you want to be?
Cause if I cry another tear I'll be turned to dust
No the sharks won't get me they don't feel loss
Just keep one eye on the horizon man, you best not blink
They're coming fin by fin until the whole boat sinks
Fin by fin
Fin by fin
Fin by fin by fin by fin

Prodigy and Chemical Brothers were on my playlist back in the 90s.
