Got back from the NEC on Saturday with arms full of bags - kitted out from head to foot with leathers, gloves, boots and helmet in time to do my training this weekend coming.

As I bought them in different shops I hadn't tried it all on at once, and when I did yesterday, I noticed that my neck was pretty exposed which could get darned cold. Any suggestions of something to wear to keep warm? Looking for something which doesn't look ultra modern given I got cafe racer gear (except the helmet which is an ADV S series).

Any help appreciated

Iv got one of those "cold killers" slips down beneath a jumper or whatever and comes up over your nose, keeps all the draughts out and would probably look pretty mean with an open face helmet,if thats what you wear.
I used to wear one of those leather masks like speedway riders used to wear ,but that type only come down just below your chin , so the "coldkiller" is perfect keeping your neck nicely insulated!
Sorry to go on so long but I'm feckin bored with these dark nights! :(

I use a black and green arabian shamaag! not sure of spelling, same as the standard arab red and white headress its about 3ft square and I fold itdiagonally roll it and push the V bit at the front wrap the ends round twice and tuck the lose ends bown the ftont of my jacket, quite bulky but lovely and soft and really insulates well.

snap.

Though these days I get a bit more paranoid about wearing it near policemen! :-D

I'd compromise...

I found a seriously technical buff at the NEC that so far is doing what it says on the card it comes on. The cyclone buff really does keep out the wind. And the cold. But compared to a normal buff isn't cheap. I didin't mind spending a bit more cos I ride all year round (don't have a car...)
Then I'd put a silk scarf over the top to hide it if I wanted to look 'old school'.
I've hidden a buff under a shamaag (or however it's spelt) too. Not the posh new one, but one of the normal ones. Layers.... more layers the warmer.

Thanks for the help guys.
Got a sil scarf from ebay for £20 so not too bad.
I've not got a retro helmet - an AGV S4 I think it's called - matt black with grey racing stripes over the top - so at least it's not too busy!

Can't wait to get out there on Saturday now.

Grief. Did a full rebuttal and PC died.
Anyway: advantages of full face: better weather protection. Better chin protection. Also, top of the range stuff (Shoei etc) is very very light. And good. But the rest isn't.
Advantages of (good) open face: lighter-less neck rotation if you crash. See better, so avoid accidents. Face in the wind (nice). If you crash, paramedics can get to your airways etc better.
How many times has anyone crashed face forward? Kick the bike away, fall off sideways, keep your head up.
Nuff said.

Schuberth J1 helmet, best of both worlds full-face/half.. is a 3/4 helmet with chin bar. On the neck wear front I have a HELD neck warmer windstopper (see Get Geared website) that works very well so far.

I use an open face helmet with halcyon goggles daily and after trying various items found that a normal woollen scarf worked best in preventing the goggles misting up, and also keeping my face pretty warm. I have just invested in a thin balaclava as the rain was hitting my head in the gap between the top of the goggles and the helmet, and at ton plus, it hurts.
In regards to the safety aspect, I am fully aware of the implications for wearing an open face. If I had worn one when I had a car pull out on me in 99 I wouldn't be here, as I put a crease in his roof and smashed the windscreen with the front of my simpson. In the rest of the offs I've had I would have been fine no matter what helmet I wore. I only decided to go to open face again this time as I was getting really bad fog-up with my full face and if I had the visor open a crack the wind was getting right in my eyes.
Before you all think I like to crash, I don't but used to average 1000miles a week at one point...and you run out of luck every now and then.

A good advert for full faces. Won't change my mind though. I've just got a lovely face mask-looks like a skull-made out of (I think) neoprene, so fairly weatherproof. Still a bit too warm to wear it though! Goes nicely with a silk scarf too.

Don't get me wrong GP, I really enjoy wearing my open face and do every day. That one occasion I was wearing a good quality full face and it did its job. A friend had to have intensive surgery on his face to rebuild it after the bike he was pillion on was involved in a smash and the cheap full face he was wearing shattered into his face...
