While removing the hanger from my TOR muffler today for painting, the inevitable happened. One of the rivnuts started spinning in the muffler. This is not the first time this has happened on one of my Americas.
I was able to drill and easy-out the bolt, and although loose, the rivnut was still good.
1- Using pliers, squeeze from the sides, bending the flange up, then file the bent up parts off.
2- Drill holes and insert self tapping screws, one to keep it from spinning when tightening and one to keep it from spinning when loosening.

There is a way of installing new rivnuts just by using the right size bolt with a nut and washer. You screw the nut fully onto the bolt, put the washer on then screw it into the new rivnut. Put the rivnut in the hole were you want it then hold the bolt steady with a spanner whilst tightening the nut onto the rivnut this will pull the base of the rivnut up and crush it firmly into said hole. Done this a few times.
