i'm thinking of removing it for polishing. But not if it's going to be a lot of trouble to remove it. What i'm thinking, and someone correct me if i'm wrong, is that if i jack the bike up till the front wheel is just touching the ground, then loosen the 2 outer fork clamp bolts and remove the main chrome cap nut and any other things that might be attached like the speedo or whatever, that i should be able to pound it off with a rubber sledge? Any thoughts as to where i may be mistaken, or other ideas how i could remove it easily?

yep daz totally correct, i done it like that but i didnt even lift the bike off the ground, just use a block of wood to bump off the top tree. do not move the top of the stanchions when the top tree is removed, as just a bit of movement is a***** to get the tree back on. good luck
