I have had my 04 Tiger for just over a year and have enjoyed every moment. i find the bike is all I want and have been very pleased with her to date. Far better to ride than the Bmmer GS I was going to buy.

Most of mileage is for work and in the last three weeks I have covered over 2000 miles. This is the first time I have had to use her every day.

Two problems have come to light, one is oil consumption. I have noticed that I am having to top up the oil every other day, not by much 100 cc's or so. I have also noticed, a just noticeable vibration coming through the bike which I'm sure was not there before.

A good friend of mine who is a biker and works in the motor trade say's that Triumphs are well known for high oil consumption. Any comments? Someone else said that there was a recent article in Bike magazine. Anyone see this?

The other problem is that the rear shock has just started to poggo. It's only noticeable on certain road surfaces, but is getting worse.

These problems may have been present prior to this recent period of hard use and it maybe just me being a bit sensitive.

Current mileage is nearly 20,000 miles whish isn't much for a 04.

I'm thinking that I should trade her in before the problems get worse. Although i love riding the Tiger I'm a bit concerned that if i buyer a newer lower mileage model (05 or 06) I could have the same problems again in a couple of years.

My 1999 Tiger (>48,000 miles) has had the odd patch of higher oil consumption but has now settled down again. The only time it got particularly bad was when the breather disc loosened. Particularly hard use doesn't seem to do her any favours - but this is much harder use than anyone would do on a day to day basis. I've heard a few of these rumours of Triumph's high oil consumption from "industry insiders" but for me it has never really been a problem - certainly no worse than large capacity Yamahas I've owned.

I'm also on my original rear shock - would love to replace it but money's too tight. Mine only really started to deteriorate after about 35,000 miles, but feels much fresher since my 48k service - don't know exactly what they did there!

My Tiger used to use oil, when I bought it, had been serviced by dealer and used some oil about 500ml in 1000 miles. Now I have serviced it and put in a high quality (Shell) fully synthetic oil. I have now done over a 1000 miles and it's not used a drop. Very strange, could be down to oil quality.


Rear shocks, just put a hagon on and it's much better well worth the money.

Thanks guys. Where can I find the breather disk on the tiger?

I don't see any signs of oil burning or leaking, other than the end of the can is blacker than it used to be. I put this down to the sports tune.

The increase in vibration is more noticeable at the end of the day - guess I might be riding harder, to get home. It just seems not as smooth as she used to.

On the oil front. I'm not sure what oil was used at the last service (main dealer) and I have been topping up with semi synthetic. Could mixing oils cause the problem?

I did find myself looking at Suzuki DL 1000's. Anyone got any views how these beasts compare to the tiger?

My tiger is due the small service and my mileage will drop back to normal for the rest of the winter (no more than 500 miles a month), so I guess I'll see what happens.

Have a look on a few Vstrom forums and have a laugh. Loads of problems, need a Powercomander/tuneboy to get them to run right at low revs.

With 50k miles on the Tiger it doesn't use enough oil between changes to bother adding. Ditto for the Speed Triple with 38k miles. Might be time to try a different oil in your Tiger. Lately I'm using Shell Rotella Synthetic but have had same results with Molbile 1.
