Rear Brake Noise

This may be a stupid question because it may just be time to have the brakes replaced, but I'm getting an odd flipping noise while I ride that quiets down when I actually apply the brakes. Has anyone else experienced this or does it just sound like it's time to get 'em changed. Thanks.

You aught to be able to see the pads and thus tell how much are left. Flashlight may help. If they be lookin thin plan for new pads, if not ponder your options. Could be a slightly warped rotor rubbing.
