I took my rocket in for servicing today, minor service so I waited, as I'm waiting I notice the new for 07? rocket III touring edition, saddle bags, seat rest, and other nice editions to the bike, ones that could possibly cost thousands of dollars to potential buyers of a new rocket III classic?. But there is a problem, as I'm looking at the bike it looks used for some reason, I look it over more carefully and its not used but somethings not right. Then I see it, it has the 05 gauges, the 05 motor, NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!!, but regardless, no black motor, no fully black gauges. So a salesmen walks up, I ask him about the bike and question him about the differences in appearance, he tells me that he is not sure, but that triumph may have re-tagged some 05s as 07s?? so to sell what had not sold before, now I'm not saying its true, but Ive seen the bike and it positively looks like the 05s, NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!! but torque magazine stated that the 2007 rockets would have the fully black gauges and motor? whats up with that?

I believe the 07's are just making it to the showrooms. The regular Rocket III still comes with the gray motor, the Classic version is in black. They may have put the bags, back rest on a regular one to "spruce" it up. As far as re-tagging an o5 and marking it as an 07, that would be a dealer suicide move, I doubt that is what happened. And if it looked used it may well have been with the 07 accesories hung on it to show you how they fit with the bike.
I could be very wrong, but there is supposedly another version (the "Ultimate" Rocket III) that has black engine, floorboards etc (like the Classic) but with the backrest, bags and windshield on it for only $700 more as a package.

NightRider - beautiful Bike Bro!! I see you have the Corbin fairing and Beetle Bags, but who makes the topbox and how is it mounted??

If Triumph offered what you have done, they'd sell a bazillion. Good on ya!

Hi Vinny:

Thanks for the compliment. I have had this set up for quite awhile.
It worked great for a +1500 mile 2-up cross country trip.
The rear top box is Givi. I will take some close
up pictures and post as soon as I can.

Many years ago I had a little Honda dualpurp that was sold as the current year model when it was actually the previous year's model. For that to happen they actually have to put errant VIN#'s on at the factory. Have no idea whether it was intentional or just a screwup but I ended up getting a modest check back from Honda as compensation (the result of a class-action lawsuit--Honda didn't give anybody a dime just because it was the right thing to do).

My dealer has four '06s, one black, 2 red, one blue tribal, and no two have the same combination of engine color, gauges, gauge mounts or kickstands. I'm beginning to think it's just a c rap shoot as they use up the parts in the line.

As sbljr said, it's not unheard of for the manufacturers to "update" their inventory. Back in '83 I bought a BMW R80GS that was supposed to be an '83 but was actually an '81 the factory had repainted in the American warehouse. No compensation ensued. Why wouldn't Triumph do it? What kind of compensation could you ask for since the new ones cost less than the '05s? :-D Besides, who determines what year the bike is? I bought mine in July '04 as an "05. Why can't Triumph decide all Rockets made after such a date are now their '06 or '07? Says right in the brochures, specifications subject to change without notice.

Checked out the 07 Rocket Touring Edition at the dealer today,i like the black/white combo color. I had the same feeling Yeti had,i had to laugh after looking it over there just seemed to be something out of wack..? I knew it was a 07 because of the color combo, the engine was silver but it struck me funny.I'm seriously thinking of up grading to the Touring Edition because of the compfort level. On long hauls my legs cramp up... unlike the Roadking Classic where i have the crash/leg/engine bars to stretch out on.. I like the saddle bags, but also would like to be able to take them off without an hour or two delay. Something like the K-Drive bags is what I'm looking for, snap on snap off without leaving behind the brackets sticking out.Has anyone asked the dealer for a differant option on this? The dealer said he would put on the risers to the handel bars no extra charge. I was wondering if Triumph supplies the risers,he said he had them in stock. I would perfer the Rivco risers if that were the case. Appreciate any input on these issues ...Thanks Rick

Just for the record, every Rocket Touring i have seen has also had the old 2 tone guages and silver motor.
I will tell you this though after buying an 05 standard rocket, and then trading it in on an 06 Classic, I find the 06 classic much more comfortable, better handling, and a much quieter motor, with no wierd noises coming out of it.. (the main reason i traded in on the 06 was engine noise and the dreaded bike wont idle problem) one more note, it is a huge savings to get the touring edition instead of the classic when you price out all the extras. I have the classic and had to buy all the extras after the fact and it was expensive. Luckily i found the Roadster windshield on this site used. I bought the K bags that pop on and off very nicely, and the new seat is wonderful compared to the old 2 piece. The handlebars are great and the floorboards work great as well. no complaints here. You just have to like the silver motor. but you are saving about 2 grand in extras. You can buy some Black engine paint for a lot less than that. good luck.

I have recently purchased a '07 Classic Tourer model. I also put performance exhaust w/ cat box removed, passenger floorboards and aux. adapter (european socket...beware U.S. buyers!). I have attached some pics. I was told that there were some 05 engines left over and decided to use them in the 07s, but they have 07 VINs.
The tourer model is a great way to get all the expensive accessories a whole lot cheaper.

I know you didn't get the R3 in Ft. Wayne. There isn't a dealer. Come clean, was it Indy? or up in Michigan?

I wonder about Triumph just grabbing whatever is in the parts bin and adding it to the next bike on the line. My '06 Classic has all black gages and the black motor.

Honestly, I've never seen a Classic with the silver bottomed gages until yours. My brother-in-law has an R3 too. His is a standard and the sliver bottomed gages are on his bike. That's fishy.

Many years ago, Kawasaki sold older, untitled bikes as new (back in the H2 days). I can't remember what happened but I do remember there was a stink over it.

Maybe Bloor should sell the older-untitled bikes as that or shred 'em. The whole scenario stinks, just like the Thai factory. :(

Yes, bought my 07 at IndyTriumph on the west side of Indy on 16th St.
My feeling on the older gauges and engines is that if it's NEW, I don't care. They haven't changed anything besides the color anyway. I love my graphite/Blue combo. Looks great with the silver engine....my opinion of course!

Your opinion is all that counts. After all, that's what forums are all about. I like all R3's no matter what color they are. Riding an R3 is a statement about your individuality plain and simple. Any Joe Blow can master a potato bike, not just anyone can master an R3.

I have a few riding buds that live around Ft. Wayne, actually north of there. One in New Haven and one in Leo. I get out that way quite often but it's usually on the T100/Spyder sidecar outfit, not the R3. Besides, the sidecar is rolling PR for the USCA.

I like taking the sidecar. I can put about anything in there I need and not have bags and packs hanging all over the bike.
