I'm buying these: http://www.andystrapz.co.uk/shop/shop.php?action=full&id=25

and want to be sure to keep them away from the rear wheel. Anyone have experience fitting luggage to these bikes? Are any pannier racks sold that would go right on (NO mods to bike!)? Rear luggage rack would be handy too but not required. Anyone fabricated something and have any recommendations for attachment points? (upper shock mount and...?) They won't be on all the time so they don't have to be beautiful but they will go on long trips so they need to be somewhat durable.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm planning to do something very similar, adding Ortlieb soft panniers to my 1970 Trophy for some planned trips and articles.

I'm going to have my nephew, who is a master welder and fabricator, make some simple and - hopefully - elegant bolt-on guards that will keep the panniers away from the wheel and spring/shock. My plan is to run a tube from the bolt just behind the rear footpeg up to a clamp on the horizontal seat rail, behind and parallel to the main frame rail that rises diagonally from the back of the transmission to the front of the seat. Then weld a small trapezoidal plate (the shape of which will also echo existing bike parts) on the tube as a protective backing for the panniers. It should be very simple and attractive, and easily removed between trips. I'll post the results when it happens - he's hard to pin down but does lovely work when finally cornered.
