Have an old bobber 76 T140. opened up the primary case to change the tensioner and the gear case to change gear oil and gasket. Found an old rag stuffed in a tube that looked like it connected the gear side to the primary side. 😳 I thought the two were separate. Now i don't know. Or if it should be sealed or what. I'm so confused ... help?

Hi Marine 78,
Whoever built your Bobber has converted it from a Left gear-change engine/gearbox, to a right gearchange engine gearbox.
The hole is where a crossover shaft fits to transfer the gearchange to the left side.

Once this crossover shaft is left out engineers make a plug for each end to seal off the ends and isolate the primary from the gearbox; idiots stuff rags in the hole.

regards
Peg
