I've had the sump off my speedmaster for a week. i was wondering about starting it up for the first time when i get it back together. The manual mentions something about the oil pump needing to be primed, i think in the section about inspecting/removing it, but it doesn't say much about when you have to do that. Do i need to after removing the sump, and if so how? Or is it only necassary if i removed the pump?

I see nothing in the manual that mentions re-priming after removing the sump. Removing the sump will not cause a loss of oil pump prime unless you turned the engine over several times without the sump and accompanying oil pool in place. You could, as an added precaution after reassemble and after adding new oil, turn the engine over with the start switch, after removing the plug wires. This will pump oil without starting the engine. This also should be done before starting your bike after winter storage. When you removed the sump you did nothing more than a oil change would do. Vegas

Thanks. I just thought somehow the oil inline before/after the pumps not being there for a couple weeks may have allowed the oil in the pumps to drain slowly. I'll definatly turn it over a few times before starting. Good idea, thanks.
