I have a 04 T100. It has a small oil leak, It looks like it is coming from the small transmission cover under the front sprocket. Is this common? Can this cover just be removed and replace the gasket, or will the parts behind it move?

Sweat is talking about the outside cover "OVER" the front sprocket, and it reads like Toy is talking about the inner cover behind (under) the front sprocket.

Toy, some have had troubles with the counter sprocket shaft seal leaking--this is the seal around the shaft on which the front sprocket is mounted. It will look like the oil is coming from the cover itself. The front sprocket will have to be removed to tell for sure if it is the shaft seal--kinda hard to see in there with the sprocket and chain in the way. I have read of some replacing the seal themselves--others have taken it in for the service dept. to accomplish.

Good luck,
Larry

Stop. I believe the first reply to your post misunderstood the area you are talking about. It may very well be the transmission cover, as you imply. Triumph calls it the 'gearchange mechanism cover'. It is below the sprocket cover. The Triumph manual shows a gasket, though the Haynes doesn't. If it IS leaking, that's not 'chain oil' - its motor oil. The manual calls for 9nm of torque if you want to snug the bolts.
The spocket cover above it does not have a gasket and is easily removed/reinstalled.

Again, I think there is a little confusion about which cover you're talking about - can you identify it better?

Sorry for the confusion.

I am looking at the "gearchange mechanism cover" I removed the front sprocket cover thinking it was the counter sprocket shaft seal. The sprocket looked dry, I checked the back with a mirror. I did notice the bottom bolt that holds the sprocket cover had a lot of oil on it, it also goes through the gearchange mechanism cover.
I use wax on the chain.

So Toy, if it is the gearchange mechanism cover, there IS a gasket under the cover (on an more careful read, both Haynes and Triumph manuals agree there's a gasket)which makes complete sense, the area inside is normally flooded with motor oil. If you're leaking out of that gasket I would carefully tighten to 9nm, clean well and observe carefully, if it still leaks there, I'd take it for service.

Toyanvil, my Thruxton developed a leak from the gearchange mechanism cover. I replaced the gasket and the darn thing still leaks! I'll have the dealer look at it before the warranty is up.

It's a simple enough job, nothing will fall out or move when the cover is removed.

I had a leak at the sprocket seal, and no, it was not chain lube.
I ordered a new seal, but wanted to ride while it was on its way to my house, so I removed the sprocket, pulled the seal out, and found, while its a cheap looking seal, it looked in fine shape.
Since it came out easy, I thought it might be leaking around the outside of the seal.
Under the seal is the bearing (sealed) that supports the sprocket, and I cleaned things up, put some sealant around the bearing, put some around the seal, and reinstalled it.
I also found some of the case bolts on the loose side and tightened them up.
No more leaks and its been 1500 miles.

No oil comes out with the removal of the seal, at least if the bike is on the side stand and the oil level is correct.
