I'm trying to identify an oil leak coming from the crank/transmission case,to the rear of the engine oil filter.A small amount of oil is dripping around a wire.
The reason for this wire is what i want to know.The unidentified wire follows the pickup coil and alternator wires up the right side of the engine.

Very good question, and a good description of the location. My guess and it's only a guess is this is the wire to the neutral switch. I see no other single black wire like this on the circuit diagram that is not accounted for.

Some of the guys who have been into the lower end could tell you for sure.

Yep, that's the neutral switch,it rides on the shift selector drum.
It's quite vague in the Triumph service manual.
