Hi does anyone here know when the S3 got the Nikasil liners? What Year?
Also from what i understand the nikasil cyl are very hard to wear down and piston rings are enough when refreshing the top end?
The reason I'm asking is i'm in the midst of buying a set of liners and want to make sure they are the nikasil ones.
Cheers Mikey

According to my factory manual, Daytonas and Speed Triples have slightly different specs on both the pistons and cylinders. I don't know why.

The manual doesn't mention Nikasil or any other coating, but it does say you can re-use the liners if they are within spec. Note: the Daytona pistons/cylinders are slightly bigger and just out of tolerance for the Speed Triple.

My understanding is that the Daytona has coated bores in wet liners, whereas the S3 motor has conventional bores cast into the block. Obviuosly this means that the wet liners have to be in a Daytona block.

Crash you're quite right - the pistons are not the same between the Daytona and other models. Daytona uses forged and others are cast.

While we're at it, the rods and crank are different too.

No idea what Mikey is trying to do though.

Hmm well, I was half right anyway:

Due to the lower rpm limit on this model (RS, ST and S3) and to save cost, the cylinder liners are made from cast iron and the pistons are cast alloy. The T595 forged pistons and lighter/less friction alloy liners can be fitted as a direct replacement. This gives a weight saving of almost 2kg. The Connecting rods are also not shot-peened which means they are not as strong if you wish to rev the engine any harder.

.....and the crank is still different.
