I bought my helmet new, back in 2003. It's an Icon Alliance, and if I'm going over, say, 45mph, the face shield literally almost disconnects and flies off when I do an over the should look before changing lanes. It's friggin scary, and could be super dangerous! Is this normal? I don't mind buying another helmet, but I'm just curious if this happens on all/most helmets, or did I just get a dud? Thanks.

I used to have that problem years ago with my Bell Star helmet.
If the visor was up I could give a sharp nod and it would come down.

I am currently using a HJC CL12 helmet and the visor mounting has a ratchet thingy that clicks as you move it the visor up and down.
This holds the visor securely in whatever position I put it.

If your helmet is around 4 years old, it is probably time to start thinking of a replacement anyway.

I have never had one do this, but then I have never bought an ICON. If you bought your helmet in 2003 it is just about time to buy a new one anyway, they should be replaced every 3-5 years (dependant upon usage level).

For the record I wear an Arai.

Get a Shoei RF1000. It's the best helmet I've ever had and it has absolutely no issues. It's a nice feeling...

is this with the visor up or down?

Any visor that is up will catch some air but if its down and does this then - no its not normal.Time for a new one

That is not normal if the face shield is down. Buy a new helmet. I have a SHOEI and an HJC and they both are lockable but even unlocked neither one has ever opened up when I looked over my shoulder.

I had the same problem when I was wearing the ICON Alliance helmets. I talked to the ICON rep at a MC expo, and he said they were aware of the problem and sent me some different connectors for the helmet. Write to ICON http://www.rideicon.com/ and maybe they'll send you some replacements. BTW: I liked the alliance helmet cause it fit my head so well. I have a Soumy Spec 1R now, and the fit isn't as good. The noise level is better, and the weight is lighter, but the fit isn't there. Usually 4 to 5 years is when you should replace your helmet. Soumy says their helmets are good for 7 years after manufacture and 5 years after initial wear.

BTW: I got around the face shield flip up, by tucking my chin into my chest before looking back. It sounds awkward, but it's easy.
