I inadvertently had part of my motorcycle cover on my pipes ar it was heating up. By the time I realized it there was motorcycle cover burned onto my pipes and it's a mess.

Anyone have any idea how to get the burned on stuff off? I don't want to scrape or mark up my pipes.

Thanks.

I've had some success rubbing the melted mess with an ice cube then using a single edge razor blade to catch an edge and it sometimes peels off.

Sccess depends on what the melted stuff is but worth a try.

The subject's been covered on this forum. You can try a search. It never happened to me, but I believe most of the answers involve some careful scraping, as already mentioned.

In time it will burn itself off. Might look a mess short term. But if the bike is used especially for longer journeys it'll burn off quicker.

Any type of metal polish and some scotchbrite pads would make them new. Just be aware when scrubbing them go with the grain of the pipe, don't stroke it like your meat, more like your giving an ”indian burn” if you know what I mean, and lift off the pipe as you progress through it so you wont scrub downwards or upwards just rotational. Hope this helps! Ive been there putting on the cover with hot pipes.

243jimb...everytime I use my heatgun I burn something. If I were to ever use your idea...could I heat the wooden scraper and alleviate risk to the chromed surface??? Then take off the residue with #0000 stainless and wd40 saturation??? I have come so close. so many times. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about burning your exhaust, think of how hot it gets on an extended run. I would heat it evenly and then try a wooden scraper to gently remove it. If it is an option, you could take the bike out for an hour or so to begin the process. You need to get it hot enough so that the plastic gets quite soft.
WD40 would likely evaporate before doing any good. You could try steel wool on the underside or back side of the exhaust to see if it would scratch (it shouldn't).
We've all done stuff like this.

On those occasions that I have come across melted mung on exhaust pipes I found that heating the goo makes it less likely to release cleanly.

The ice cube method I previously described cools the goo and makes it more likely to release cleanly and the chance of damage to the chrome finish is nil.

If you have an ice cube handy give it a try... you might be surprised.

I can hear the cries already but, hydrochloric acid will remove it.
I've had a similar thing happen on the stainless header pipes on one of my bikes and had zero issues removing it this way.
Obviously you want to ensure the acid wont come into contact with other parts of the bike (use some foil or similar) and be sure to have plenty of water handy for rinsing (garden hose) and of course you want to wear appropriate protection (chem resistant gloves).
Pour acid onto the effected area, wait a moment and if necessary use a nylon scourer to remove the offending material which will come off super easy. Then immediately rinse well with water once it's all removed.
It's super easy, will not damage your pipes and they will look brilliant after it's done.

I burned some of my glove off on the exhaust and it was a big black patch, I tried to rub it out without scratching it up but eventually gave up and it just burned itself off from riding. If you don't mind the look for a bit it'll go away after a few long rides.
