Do any of you folks like to go camping via motorcycle? I don' t mean motel to motel, I mean carrying your tent and sleeping back on the back of the bike. Doesn't have to be a long trip, I just like the feeling of heading out of the garage with all the gear. OK, I don't usually carry ALL my food and beverages for the weekend, but I think you know what I mean. I try to do it two or three times a year - I'm heading out to Death Valley next weekend for the annual "Death Valley Daze", loosely organized by the Village Idiots chapter of the IBMWOA. And in 2005 I camped at Laguna Seca for the MotoGP. I got a killer picture from my campsite of Nicky on his parade lap. Anyway, are the RAT Raids all motels, are do they have camping facilities?

I see all these neat "fender eliminators", "tail tidys", and high mount exhausts, but I just can't indulge 'cause they interfere with mounting my saddlebags.

End of ramble.

Regards,

Trumpet Cabin, when we finally/eventually/maybe open as a b&b&b, will have a campsite. Got a GREAT firepit!

But last time we took a poll, everyone seemed to want an actual bed... :)

No no no no actually yes.

Maybe it's the lack of venemous spiders and snakes here, but in the summer we do just go and stick a tent up somewhere. It's normally with some pals, and even at a rally somewhere (did the Farmyard Party in Yorkshire - nearly 3000 bikers and not a building for sleeping in) but done a weekend with 6 tents and 6 bikers....
Not done a camping weekend on my own, but I wouldn't be objectionable to the idea...

Irony is, I'm of to Australia in March...hiring a Speedmaster and off up the east coast... and moteling it. My reasoning....it's a trip of a lifetime and I'm not slumming it!!!!

We go tent camping a few times a year but we take the car, still loads of fun. I have done a lot of motorcycle camping in the past but not so much anymore because of the kids, dogs etc. I miss it in a way, but sleeping in a tent on an inflatable air mattress is much nicer than sleeping on a thin foam Army sleeping pad, plus a few dogs in the tent keeps the chill off quite nicely, like giant hot water bottles that smell bad...

Yes! I've travelled and camped by bicycle and now by motorcycle besides going with my son's boy scout troop monthly. The scouts camp in all kinds of weather and you learn what "be prepared" means.

I've decided the secret to enjoyable bike camping is to remain flexible - that is, when the weather turns against you, use a motel.

I carry a small tent and bag but draw the line at taking cooking gear, great to wake up with the sun baking through the tent, breakfast on some crusty bread and cheese with some local meat and a bottle of water then hit the road again, cool in Europe but also means your not tied to finding somwhere and as has happened to me in the past, riding around unfamiliar places trying to find somewhere that would take in a rider who dos'nt speak the language.

I did it last year at Laconia. I used my back packing equipment and even then space is tight. I went with Harley owners so I should have know from the start it was not going to be enjoyable. I had everything I needed, but I came to the epiphany that I no longer enjoy sleeping on the ground. All my future trips will have a room at the destination.
