More ignition coil troubles with 26K showing on a 2001. I have been experiencing a stumble or misfire coming off idle for several thousand miles. Lately the stumbling became so distracting I was no longer enjoying the ride. I searched the threads several times looking at what was said about low speed missing, stumbling, etc. Carbs and coil replacement seemed to be the common fault. I can grudgingly do maintenance on carburetors but was not looking forward to it. Based on info from the forum I gambled and replaced the coil. What luck!! My Bonnie runs like a top. Strong idle, no stumbling…no carb work! Several hundred miles later and things are still looking good. Thanks to all who contribute!

Additionally, I applied plenty of dielectric grease to all four connections on the coil. The low voltage connections are open to the elements. I have not experienced a gulley washer yet, but I did ride in light rain near McComb/Natchez Mississippi this weekend without any of the normal "wet" symptoms . So far so good with that also.

Thanks again

Yeah Mike I lost my coil at 700 miles on my bonnie black, I have since traded the bonnie in on a scrambler and plan on getting a noligy aftermarket coil and replacing the stock. The coil problem seems pretty common but can't say that I have heard anything about carb replacements though.

Mike,

Did you use an OEM coil or an aftermarket coil?

How do you guys know when the coil fails ??

I have been having similar symptoms to those you describe but have been blaming and messing about with the carbs...

Is there a test you can perform to check the coils ??

No scientific diagnosis!... Maybe some of the more skilled folks out there that can say?

I read the threads.... drove the thing until I could no longer tolerate the stumbling and sputtering.. Then I dropped $80 on the replacement coil. Meanwhile, a good friend who has been in the bike/ATV business for years was confident I would find water in the float bowls or a plugged pilot jet. Since I had already bought the coil when I got the carb advice I tried it first and lucked out.

It makes all the difference in the world when it runs good....

Again, maybe someone will tell us how to check the coil but I don't know. Good luck!
