Gday all, looked through heavily modded classics, the Suzuki Hayabusa wheels seem to be the easiest to slot in with minimal modification.

Im looking for front & rear cast/mag wheels to slot into the existing stock 2000 thunderbird swingarm & forks.

Ive fitted a sidecar to my tbird & the engineer recommends fitting a mag rear wheel. If Im going to do that, I might aswell change front & rear to suit.

This topic has probably been covered somewhere- apologies for not finding it.......regards jeff

Thanks Denny, checked out the kawasaki wheels link, nice wheels. But all I need is a cast rear wheel to slot in-

Id prefer something not far from t bird size. The trident or trophy 900or 2 sided swing arm wheel from early 900 sprint??

Its not for looks or sporting performance, purely to replace a spoked rear wheel with a cast wheel for strength.

I'll leave the front spoked, as I dont want be changing whole front ends or fork legs & calipers, rotors etc.

Never driven a car & the tbird is my only transport currently, so I dont have months to play with various bits, a weekend maybe.

Will look at the models above & see if i can source something from a wrecker.

Any thoughts or suggestions much appreciated. regards jeff

A rear from one of the T3 Sprint, Trophy, Daytona, etc. is probably the easiest. The spacers need to be cut down. The rear brake needs to be changed. If you source all of those parts from a Trophy I think that works pretty good.

The difference is... The sport bikes used a smaller rotor on the rear. Some of the sport bikes use an underslung brake, and that is not compatible with the TBird swingarm.

Some have had a larger rotor made to fit the Cast wheel.

I've not done this so I don't know a lot about the details.

Unfortunately the TBird rotors don't fit the cast wheels.

to sum it all up-

Id need a whole swing arm, caliper, wheel & rotor...............change the whole ass end.

The sidecar people have 15 inch car wheels to slot in, which in the long run will be the way to go. When I want to ride the tbird solo, will have to change the rear wheel aswell as unhook the chair. Only another 20 minutes or so.

A daytona sports tyre or similar, will chew up pretty quick on the rear of an outfit. The kawasaki rims do look awesome, very similar to the rims I had on my 2001 955 sprint st.

But I just needed to know my options & weigh up- practicality vs time vs money vs effort. Thanks a million for your input, ride safe, regards jeff

Unless the sidecar rig actually requires a different swing arm you don't need one. The ZZR or Triumph T3 sports wheel will go straight into the TBird swing arm and will run on the TBird axle. As Denny pointed out you will need to modify the rear brake. There are two options here

1. Swap to a over the swing arm style Trophy / Sprint rear caliper/ perch and brake arm - this will allow you to use the smaller Kwak or Trump rear rotor.

2. For the T3 rear wheel only - Contact Triumphant or Sprint in the UK as one or the other of those (I don't remember who) used to supply a custom rotor which would allow you to use the Tbird rear brake with the T3 mag wheel. IIRC Triumphrat member Saigon5 fitted one.

Cheers again Mick & Denny, you guys rock.

Just checked out "TRIUMPHANT" website- specialise in mag wheel conversions, including rotors to suit it.

They have a dedicated thunderbird section. Lots of tasty customs etc.

The rear is a straightforward bolt up job, but you need the early type 'above the disk' caliper, caliper mount, brake disk and torque arm.

The front end is more involved - I had to machine a spacer for the front wheel to fit the TBS forks and use Daytona disks. If I hadn't already got the TBS front end, I'd just have swapped out the whole lot for a complete Daytona front end.

I sourced most of the bits on eBay - but it took a while to find them all at a sensible price.

Sweet - looks a lot like the ZRX wheels, actually.

So tell me about that rear end - are the sidecase brackets a custom job? And how is your rear indicator setup, setup? Can't really tell from the pic.

And not something I'll do, but others might be curious about that windscreen - okay, I'm curious too, I just won't be doing it personally.

How solid do you feel those crash bars to be? Any reason you went with 'em instead of sliders?

Were the later tbird's rear brake caliper fitted below the disk/rotor?

My 2000 model Tbird seems to have the rear brake caliper above the disk. Which is whats required huh?

What year are your daytona rims?

The hardcases I have were made by a now defunct Italian company called Nonfango. The topcase rack and side fittings are standard Nonfango, but I had to weld up some brackets to suit the TBird.

The indicators are part of the Nonfango kit and mount on the side racks.

The windshield is a 'Kappa' which I picked because you could rake it back to minimise turbulence. It's not as protective as the Triumph summer screen but generates far less wind noise.

I've never (fortunately) had to put the crash bars to the test but picked them because I wanted somewhere to mount highway pegs too. They are made by Hepco and Becker.


Trumpyjeff:

All TBirds have the same rear caliper, mount and disk rotor. As Mick said, the original rotor won't fit cast wheels so you either change the disk caliper, mount, torque arm etc. or keep the original caliper and get a custom size disk rotor.

Don't know what age my Daytona wheels are, but judging by the state they were in before I powdercoated them, pretty old! I think any of the 17" size T3 series cast rear wheels should fit the TBird.

I spent quite some time in front of the parts computer at my local (and friendly) Triumph dealer cross checking various components.

I've attached a 'work in progress' shot which might help.

Hi.

Appreciate if you can specify which Daytona Model when you refer to the earlier type. Also, if the front end is originally a thunderbird forks, will it be a straightforward swap? If yes, it will have 2 brake discs as compared to the t-bird 900. Can I simply not use the additional disc brake and just use only one?

Earlier types would be any of the T300 models.

i.e. 885 cc triples and 1180cc fours

And the very unusual (stateside) 750cc triples and 1000cc fours.

There a few of the early 955's that "might" have acceptable donor rims as well.

This is another one of those subjects that has been beaten to death in this forum.
Some creative searching will turn up lots of info.

for example some Kawasaki rims will also work.

Can I simply not use the additional disc brake and just use only one?
I have seen several hyabusa customs with one of the front discs removed.
I suppose those guys do it in order to show of their mega expensive hand engraved and chromed rims. ???

it should not be a problem.
