Anyone else out there getting a loud backfire on startup? It sounds like a rifle shot! Very annoying.

Doesn't always do it, but when it does it scares the hell out of anyone that is near it.

It became a problem after installing the shorties and re-jetting. ?????

My Speedy has the TOR's and has been jetted....It will backfire almost every time I start it with the choke on first.Try starting it by turning the motor over while you pull the choke knob out...mine won't back fire this way...!!

As kevin said, if you don't touch the throttle you may find it doesn't do it. Mine never does it UNLESS i touch the throttle while starting. Then it will do it probably 25% of the time or maybe more. If it's doing it and you don't touch the throttle, then you need to sort out the jetting because thats the only thing that made mine backfire even w/o touching the throttle. Once i nailed the jetting it's never done it since. Also realize that backfires have exploded many an airbox on the twins ! Thats one advantage to drilling the box and aftermarket filters. The less restriction, the faster the pressure can escape.

It is all in the jetting, my bike used to sound like a bomb when it first turned over. Once I got the jets, intake, exhaust, dialed in. No more boom! I think the 45 pilots helped.

And check out the updated pix on my signature line.

Thanks Guys, I was wondering What I was going to do do, now that I've pretty well spent my allowance on the pipes.

Scared the CRAPP!! out of some little kids and Grampa looking at my Speedy outside the Gun shop in Arizona, made me jump a little.

Spanky.

I was geting loud backfire after getting the pipes and re jetting. When you rejet the carbs you can do it two ways (in my humble opinion). The correct way is to remove the rear wheel, move the airbox back and remove the carbs and move them back. OR, leave the rear wheel on and take a crowbar and "move" the air box back. This will do wonders for the airbox- such as breaking it (mine was broke in three places). Take it to Team Triumph in Janesville, WI and if that is too far away, look them up and ask them for a referral to a dealer in your area who are mechanics, not parts changers and plumbers. :hammer:

It would be much easier to remove the rear fender than the rear wheel to remove the carbs, niether of which has to be done to re-jet. The only place for a crowbar around a bike is to flog the guy f%$^^%g with it IMHO.

You do not have to remove the rear wheel or the rear fender to get the carbs out. You can just lift the bike (a little), remove the 2 screws that attach the airbox to the fender in order to gain enough clearence to get the carbs out. Do not 'crow bar' the air box, it will break.

You do not have to remove the carbs at all to rejet. Just take off the float bowls. (easier said than done)

About two months after I bought my TBA I had that problem. It was January and starting it in the morning was tough because it was so cold out so I would tweak the throttle during start up. Well the last time I ever did that again, the airbox literally blew up. It cracked in about three places and the plastic fell into the box. If it wasn't for my seat, I would probably be missing some important man parts. DON'T USE THE THROTTLE DURING START UP!!!

Mine will do it even with the stock pipes on only you can't hear it as well. The only time it wouldn't backfire was when I had re jetted to rich, had to lean it out some and so it's backfiring again. :yayyy:
