I've just ordered a new storm and looking at a more comfortable seat.

Looking at the Triumph Australian website, it appears to me that there are two longhaul seats available.

They list a longhaul touring seat (part no. T2305357) as being compatible with an adjustable rider backrest (part no. A9708160).

However, when you look up the Longhaul riders backrest kit, it gives the part no. of the backrest as A970158 and states to be used in conjunction with a dual touring seat part no. A9700224.

Am I missing something here?

I believe the backrests are the same except for the pattern in the vinyl. I don't recall which is which, but your dealer should be able to figure it out and get the one that matches the pattern used on your seat.

Hi TBird,
I noticed this too when I received my dual longhual seat. I'm almost certain that there are simply two part numbers for one part. There is only one Triumph dual longhaul seat for the T-bird. For some reason Triumph has two part numbers for it. That's what I discovered anyway...

There are two different long haul seats. A one piece seat, and another like the stock seat that has a removable passenger section.

Yes there is also a one one piece long haul seat SINGLE seat. I think we are talking about the DUAL longhaul rider seat. There are two different part numbers for the DUAL longhaul seat.

Congratulations Tbird. :)

The longhaul dual seat is the go if you are doing big k's and value your relationship with your pillion....
When I test rode the demo bike with SWMBO, it had the standard rider seat and pillion 'brick'.... we only went about 200 metres and she said that the pillion seat was the most uncomfortable seat she had sat on... The longhaul seat was the first "Accessory" ordered.....

BUT... Here's a tip.... Buy your "extras" from the states...... On the seat alone, you'll save over $200 from MADSS.com...... Chris there is very helpful and postage is reasonable.... The more bits u order and he can fit in one box the better.... I haven't dealt with Fast Eddy, 'yet', but reading the forum, I believe he is also a good operator and forum member.... I just wish I had of realised this before I ordered all my bits thru the dealer, until recently..;)

I'm sure I read somewhere that the back rest was originally made for the Rocket III.

Reason for two part numbers, is the Rocket III and Thunderbird have a different pattern on the vinyl used.

So one part number is for Rocket III pattern vinyl, and the other part number is for the Thunderbird pattern vinyl.

I have a longhaul one piece seat with a backrest.

I also have a passenger long haul seat, which is shaped exactly like the passenger end of the long dual seat. This one has no space for a backrest.

Mate, thanks for your advice. I'm currently holidaying in Canada & USA for the next three months sampling some of the best craft beers in the world and when I get home I will be picking up a brand new Storm (how good is that?)

Anyway I hope to pick up a more comfortable seat while I'm in the US, hence my trying to get the right one by sorting out the confusion over the part numbers.

I recently sold my Thunderbird 900 with a King & Queen seat and noticed a real difference in comfort of the Storm's seat.

When I bought my 'bird, I had the longhaul seat fitted as the standard passenger seat was much to small.

After about 100 miles, I get a pain in base of my back, right on the bottom of spine. I ordered the back rest and it has helped a little.

There have been some posts, that it pushed you forward on to the tank. For me it works OK, I have it on the last setting all the way back.

I do like the extra support of the back rest, have just ordered an Air Hawk 2 seat pad to see if this helps.

This is the only problem I have found so far with the bike, a sore ass on a long run.

Maybe if you could find a 'bird with a rider back rest, you could see how it feels for you.

Good bloody luck to you, Graham.... Here we are, lucky if the temp gets over 10 deg celsius, pissed rain for the last week, and you're lappin it up over there, "sampling" beer.....:(

Anyhows.... I'll ditto everything GT said.... I had the same issue with a bit of back pain on long rides..... But I got the rider backrest from MADSS and I find it has improved my comfort 100%..... welll.. that might be stretchin it a bit,,,, But it has made a BIG difference..... Mainly the support it gives my lower back..... I have it on #1 and don't find it pushes me onto the tank..... if I adjusted it up further, sure it would..... Like GT said, see if u can get a sample sit over there...... Probably best if you could ride one fitted up like that...

On the comfort of the longhaul seat, I found it was a bit 'ordinary' at first, but now I have done about 5000k's it feels that it has settled in to my "shape" and combined with the rider backrest, makes a very comfortable ride.....:)

Enjoy ya holiday...... 3 months, hey.... just about the length of our winter,,,,,

I ordered the longhaul seat and backrest from the States...... a lot cheaper unless you can strike a deal when you order the bike

Dont get carried away by ordering heaps. Keep the price below A$1,000 to avoid customs duty......

btw: some of the triumph Jackets are bargains from them :D


Also just looking at some old emails had trouble with madss getting the passenger longhaul seat ie. they couldnt figure out how to wrap /post to Australia so I got the seat from Detroit Triumph who had no problems


Should add that madss wont take credit cards from overseas but will do Paypal ...

Well it seems the confusion has been cleared up concerning the longhaul seat and differing part numbers.

According to MADDS, the part numbers (T2305357305 &A9700224) refer to the same seat.

Triumph used Part no.A9700224 until the release of the Thunderbird SE
which has the Longhaul seat as standard, then they changed the part number to T2305357305.

their site says $50 for all overseas order ( free for over $1000 but then you have customs problems )

I cant remember what my costs was as I added a Balsham jacket to the order so 2 separate items showed on my visa statement..... $339.61 & $357.39 which is pretty good for a jacket and seat


I ordered all my quick release sissy bar etc from madss but only ever put this on or the longhaul seat on when I go for a long ride on a weekend...... just have the original seat minus the passenger seat and it looks great this way most of the time
