I'm trying to decide on which performance off-road pipes to get put on my new 2006 SM. Dealer is going to remove the AI.
Which are louder, or which has best sound?
All things being equal, which provides the better performance?
Any re-jetting required with this install? I'm going to pull off the snorkel as soon as I get the bike shipped to me.
Need your responses ASAP.
Thanks

On my two Americas I installed Slash cut shorties on one, Speedmaster shorties on the other.

The slash cut sound the best and that bike performs the best. I wish it were the other way around, I like the looks of the Speedies best.

I originally got long slash cuts but they were way too loud and tinny sounding. They went on and came back off the same day.

A great question. I've seen lots of suggestions on the subject and looking forward to hearing from some of the experts. I just got my 2006 SM and am putting it away for the winter in stock condition. In the spring my plan is to get pipes, and I'm assuming rejetting, AI removal, rework the air intake. I'll talk to the dealer about doing it for me, but it may be nice to get my hands dirty and do it for myself. There's a link on how to do it. P.S. I'm also thinking of getting a solo seat from Corbin, and a 19 tooth sprocket for touring the Cabot Trail in the summer.

I have long slash cut TORs - to my ears they're great, nice rumble cruising, bit of a snarl revved up. No other performance mods made. I read on one thread either here or BA.com that someone had problems with the short pipes because the end of the exhaust is vertically below your head, rather than a foot or so behind it, so the noise level to the rider was a lot louder, especially when wearing a full helmet. He changed from short to long. No idea whether that would be true for everyone.

Well, there's the reason for my question....the design of the free-flow pipe is estentially the same for both the long and short TOR's, but I'm wondering how the sound & performance compares between the long and shorts, because of the difference in the pipe lengths. I saw one post somewhere that implied that the longs were "tinny" sounding compared to the shorts. I'm wondering if the shorts may sound better because the exhaust openings are physically closer to the rider's ears.
Any further opinions or expertise?
thanks

I scored a set of short TORS, new, in the box, for $188, delivered on Ebay. They just showed up to day.

In about 4 and 1/2 months, I'll be able to put them on and give you a report... :(

You're about to spend $385 on TOR "performance" pipes. If you sold your stock pipes on the "bay of pigs", you may get $50-75 for them. There are folks who will buy the stock pipes, modify them (baffle removal) and turn them around for a profit. So lets say you have $460 to work with at the time of purchase.

Here's my sage advice. Please chime in folks. Don't waste your money on pipes you'll replace a year or two from now.

Ditch the idea of the TOR short or longs. Wait, save a couple hundred more and buy a nice set of good sounding (truly performance increasing) after market pipes. Bottom line. The TOR pipes (short or long) will never sound as good or increase performance, like the aftermarket guys.

I went almost two years with the TOR longs, before switching to Thunderbikes (not affiliated). I'm now trying to offset the price of the Thunderbikes with a Ebay sale of my TOR longs.

Be smart, save a dollar or two and go for the non-Triumph alternative pipes.

Just my two zloty.

Photos of both bikes, I like the looks of the SpeedMaster shorties the best, but prefer the sound of the Slashcuts.
Either gives better access to chain for lubing. Out of the way for working on wheels, etc..
