I kinda like the stock headlight's DRL, and replacing the housing is expensive when you consider the additional cost of the Motodemic headlight ring, so I'm considering one of the H4 LED replacements.

This one has very good reviews on Amazon, but I'm unsure if it will fit in the housing. Short of pulling my fairing off and checking for clearance behind the bulb, has anyone else replaced their bulb with an LED? Results?

I fitted a bulb similar to that in my Bobber headlight. It was a tight fit as the Bobber has a small headlight bowl, but it is doable. It worked really well (once I had the bulb the right way up) I ended up replacing it with a sealed unit LED but the H4 bulb will work ok.

Hmm...i'll tell you, it's pretty tight back there with the stock headlight housing.

I use to have this one ( http://stores.advmonster.com/h4-r3-led-headlight/ ) on my Thruxton R, zip tied the module outside the bucket and had the ribbon heat sink come out the bucket to make it fit. The LED light output was better than stock but I wasn't "wow'd" of the light spread. The one you linked seems to have better LED diode placement and closer design so it may output better and spread.

*I've since converted to an aftermarket LED headlight, but that option is more $$ as you well know.

Yes, you need to use the Motodemic ring to fit any 7” aftermarket LED headlight (as far as I know, there is no-one else making adapter rings).

I went with Nolden 2nd Gen Headlight (a bit pricey, not a known brand in America, but quite popular in Germany with the BMW R-nine-T bikes and SUVs out there); I liked the way it looked better than Motodemics “JW Speaker” selections (and has a really bright DRL as well).

Of course you can always just get the kit the Motodemic ring ( https://motodemic.com/shop/triumph-7-inch-headlight-adapter-ring/ ) and then go on Amazon and search for a 7” Moto Headlight knock off for under $100. They all seems to have gotten good reviews and a buddy has one on his Harley Sportster without any issues. It may not be as bright as the Nolden or JW Speaker (who makes the light for Motodemic) and cannot comment on longevity, but seems to output a bit better than LED inside OEM reflector.

That's a nice headlight!:surprise: Can you independently switch on the DRL without the low beam being on?

If you have a Euro version of the bike yes. If you have the North American version of the bike then no, unless you buy " https://newbonneville.com/shop/easy-start-headlight-control-module/ " to trick the system. That is what I use. The site mentions it does not fit for Water Cooled Bike. While it is true, it won't fit in the bucket with the factory reflector housing, it will fit with most aftermarket 7" LED housing and work as intended.

Turn on Bike, headlight is off (DRL is on full brightness..it's pretty darn bright), tap on the High Beam button and then High & Low beam turns on (DRL dims in brightness, no way to adjust), tap on the High Beam button again and only the low beam is on (again DRL dims, no way to adjust). You will not be able to run in DRL mode only, after you press the high beam button, unless you turn the bike off and on again.


Although the H4 connection is plug and play, I made my own plug and play harness to prevent from Cutting and splicing wires on the bike and headlight for the Parking Light. The light came with a 3 Pin Sealed Male harness, therefor you'll need a JST JWPF 3 Pin Connector Male (http://www.cycleterminal.com/jst-jwpf.html) for the bikes end.

I have the "rest-of-the-world" switchcube. If the Nolden DRL works off of that switch that would be a nice upgrade. Thanks for the post.:beerchug

I guess the most important question is how is the Nolden high beam compared to the OEM Triumph high beam? (That's my only issue with the stock lamp; useless high beam.)

I leave to work at 4:40am and during warmer temps I'll ride into work (still dark outside). So I know your pain about lack of proper lighting. To be honest the high beam could be a bit better on the Nolden (that or I got use to my Miatas factory low/high LED lights which are freaking amazing)..but it's enough to see further out

It's an easy swap between the two..I'll try to get comparison pictures for you with my DSLR and adjust the exposure so you see what the eye sees (estimated anyway).

The only down side is that it has a sharp cut off line, good to to prevent from blinding on coming traffic (it's a Bright lights, so people will notice you, I would hope anyway haha)...but not so good when leaning into a corner as it gets dark on the edges (high beam will take car of it though).

Halogen scatters the light better than LED, but as you already know..the brightness sucks on it.
