Hey

Has anybody tried switching the air box and using pod filters instead. K&N makes them for a 1995 trident and speed triple. I have been told that they will not work. I do know from changing and or cleaning the K&N filter that I put in the air box two things. One, its a major pain in the ass and two the carb openings are not totally round I guess because of a vacuum set up . So the question is can it be done or do I need to change the carbs.

Thanks for the input.....HOPEFULLY

Richard

I recently tried to do this on my 95' Sprint. What I found is that K&N doesn't tell you that thier pods (#RU2780) are too wide and you can't get them on the engine side by side. This was with the Mikuni 36mm CV's on the 855cc motor. I wanted to get rid of that awful airbox too. I too have been told that it won't work for jetting reasons but, I think I could have worked that out if the parts actually fit the motor they said that it would.

I've never tried this, but I have read a lot about it. The short version is that it's probably not worth doing.

The longer version is that the pods don't quite fit & the middle one will need to be bent up to get them on. If you manage to beat them into submission, you'll end up with sub-optimal airflow. The pods are supposed to be good for 1-4 HP at the top end, possibly at the expense of low- & mid-range. The K&N filter that fits in the stock airbox is supposed to be good for a 2-3 HP boost throughout the range.

That airbox is a huge pain to get to, but it's apparently pretty good at giving the carbs what they need...

Cheers,

Saratoga Springs? I'm from about 40 min SE of there.

Anyway- we'll wait for a couple of the real know-it alls answer this one but from what I've read there is virtually no noticable gain to be felt with the pods and actually they hurt the normal, usable range.

I almost did it just for the look but decided against it.

Someone wrote me when I was selling something on Ebay . He wanted the boots from the air box , he said he was using them on the end carburetor's , hence the middle filter would fit. And re jet the hell out of it ?? I called K&N and they claim you do not have to re jet. I'm guessing they don't test their claims and they didn't try installing them on a Triumph.

I really hate having to clean the filter the way it is now. Really sucks. Might have to look into changing the carburetors all together.

Anyone have any ideas..Let me know

The only way to find out if it will work is try it, so I did. My sole intent was to get rid of the airbox. My thinking was I didn't even care if it made any more H.P. just that it wasn't any worse. K&N says it won't need rejetting ? So much for truth in advertizing. For my experimenting with this, I know you're going to have to do major rejetting ! K&N gave me my money back.

The web address below will take youi to an interesting site that has a lot of experience with Hinkley Triumphs, i suspect anyone who reads this site will be able to dispute bizare statements of enormous horsepower gains from K&N filters and jetting... wilcoxengines

Ok this is the first time i have tried the button for URL's if it wont take you there just google wilcox engines and nav the page...enjoy and spend up if you have the cash.

Yea dunno longroad.... i only noticed that the thick red line shows more horsepower through the entire rev range, i guess they have a pretty good history when it comes to stating their involvement with Triumph engines. Seeing that i am in Austalia, i would be buying the minimum from them and hoping that they would give me the specs so that i could have the work done here(shipping to them would just not be practicle). Buying the cams and the valves would probably make them happy, from memory when i bought stuff from the UK a while back it was VAT free due to me not living in the UK. There is also no mention of jetting and dyno tuning,so thesewould be extra cost aswell.

Well the full monty for me to do that work at their prices, which i am assuming is including labour and a little bit extra added on for the exchange rate is around, here is comes.... $4500 aussie crackers...i have triples the cost in pounds to get the aussie dollar amount, in actual fact it is a little less at the moment so for right now it could only be $4000.... thats almost another bike here in Australia.... if i had the money i would be in... kinda like to see the look on some peoples faces when you cut loose on an old speed triple tricked up to the eye balls... probably someone around somewhere that could do it cheaper, but you would want to be confident of their work or it could end up costing you considerably more in the end..... oh for someone elses bank balance.

Call them up, maybe they'll cut you a deal if you give them the old verbal reach around! I'm sure there stuff is flying out the door faster than they can make it - probably got what you need lying around on a rack in the back. Maybe even trade them services, depending on what you do etc.... doesn't hurt to ask, does it? :-D
