So, while I'm sitting here at work with nothing else to do for the day I figured I would see what kind of careers you guys have for a living?

Right now I'm working through a contracting company. I work at United Health Groups in the IT department. Right now I just setup computer systems for users, swap some hardware, and activate ports in the networking rooms. This is pretty much a dead end job but it does pay decent.

I just really need to figure out some kind of computer career to specialize in. I've always loved hardware and working with my hands (no sick comments!). I would love to be a network admin or even just work for a company that sets up complete networks. I really do need to find something that pays a bit more too. I know that I'm only 21 and I still have quite a few years ahead of me, but I just know that I can do more with my skills and knowledge than what I'm doing right now. I have years of computer experience under my belt and also have an associates degree in Information Technology with Networking.

Anybody have any ideas or openings in their business? I'll move to wherever, i don't have anything holding me back in Minnesota.

Hey now, just because I know a lot about computers doesn't put me in the nerd class. I work on my car and my friends cars most weekends, I love riding motorcycle, I have piercings, and I bench 250lbs. Computers are just something that I caught onto really easily. It's something that I like to do for a living. And yes, I resent being called a nerd!!

Dude's You mean you guys actualy work? Man like I gotta ask, Whats it like?sean I sell stuff to all you computer geeks and engineering dweebs, but never knew ya guys did anything with the stuff. Selling is easy and fun but even better is selling something that someone doesn't need but making him think he needs it real bad. And they pay me for it.....only other job that would be just as good for less money..........swim suit salesman for women!..sean

Fuel Injection design engineer. Part ME part EE, mostly computer jockey. Used to work for original equipment supplier to the likes of BMW, Jaguar, Buell, Cannondale, etc. but SAGEM sold us off to Johnson Controls who moved all the OE business to France and sold this plant to aftermarket company Standard Motor Products. This company makes Dilbert's employer look good.

So what kind of schooling background do you all have? Did your schooling help you get into your career or is it just something that you stumbled upon?

I'm District Manager of Technical Services for a data management compny. I manage a team of pre- and post-sales engineers that cover NM, AZ, SoCal, HI. We design, sell, and implement solutions for large organizations.

I spent time as an IT manager for a hospital group where I learned you need to be in the revenue stream. Yeah - I jumped to the dark-side of the vendor/client relationship but I run my shop clean and the coin is good. If you want to talk about IT careers give me a PM and we can have convo. Through my work I see loads of different types of organizations and have insight as to the IT environments in each.

To answer the school question - I have a Bachelors in MIS, Masters in Organization/Management, I am considering continuing my Ph.D. program beginning this summer pending work load. Had to jump out for a while. Neither of the degrees I have completed specifically prepared me for what I do or enabled me to make a higher salary, but they did prepare me to work my *ss off (Which I am not doing for the rest of the day - Sun is coming out gents - gotta ride!)
