I'm a bit worried that the '07 triple I have bought is actually an '06

The reason i'm dubious about it is because it doesn't have the extra heat shields on the lower manifold, that i believe the '07's have. There aren't any other aesthetic differences on which to on to guage it by...unless it was a roulette green one.

I was assured by the dealer that it is an '07. They tell me the VIN number is definitely an '07, and that the Aussie and New Zealand '07 Triples are not going to have the extra heat shields.

Apparently the '07 model's have VINS ending in 81422 (I think) and above:

The VIN on my bike is: SMTEE5805R7284362, so it is well within the '07 model's by their reckoning.

I know it's a stretch, but can anyone else verify that this would be an '07 spec'd bike.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really care about the heat shields, will most likely put an aftermarket system on at some stage anyway :-D , but the '07 apparently has an improved ECU, and I just don't want to feel ripped off

Any help/comments appreciated

well. a vehicle mfg'd that late would usually be considered a 07, but it dang sure don't have the 07 exhaust. Looks like ya got a 06-2/3! :-D
oh oh...thats not what I want to hear :lalala:

Could be that the Australian bikes have different (read old) exhaust...thats what i'm hoping.

Proabably more reliable for me to rely on VIN # and date of manufacture. If I can find other '07 owners that can verify that their VIN #'s and Date of manufacture are prior to mine, then i'll be happy...

oh, and what does the 2/3 mean??

One of the digits in the VIN number is a 7 to signify 07 model. I think it`s the first digit of the second part of the number, which would indicate that your is an 07 model. It`s the same digit in every vin, I`ll double check with the dealer, which one it is. All the dealer floorstock at my local are 07, in the latest colours, white and green. They are showing an 11/06 compliance which is only 1 month away from the 10/06 compliance in your pics. I`ll be there tomorrow and will get exact verification for you.

Thanks, that'd be great! :-D
Would you mind asking the dealer what his take is on this model having what looks like an '06 exhaust, and not having the new heat shields? Thanks.

If Triumph had exhausts left after the 06 vehicle planned run out then they would fit them to the 07 bikes or send them out to their service route. If as may be there was a shortage of new heat shield items then they would certaily take them out of the service route to keep the production line running.

Stick to your guns and tell your dealer if the bike is an 07 you want an 07 exhasut system. If the bike is in deed a 06 ask for your money back. You may get a discount on your aftermarket system.

Isn't the exhaust system the same except for that shiny thingie on the mid pipe? They're propably bolt on to the "06 exhaust".
no premie, it's different, doesn't have the 02 sensor plug on the midpipe.

That is one hideous looking CAT-bucket. Not quite on the Ducati Monster colostomy bag end of the ugliness scale, but pretty close. No wonder they had to improvise something to hide this mess.

Does the '05-'06 midpipe fit the '07 header & mufflers? If I at some point (in my dreams) update my ride to a bit more recent model, the catalysator has to go. I also wonder if the '07 header still has the small pre-cat in it, or has it migrated to this new bigger can?

The dealer told me my blue bike is an '07. It doesn't have the cover on the exhaust, but does have the O2 there. I don't have the VIN right now, but I remember the plate manufacture date was 06/06. Was gives? The insurance ran the VIN and it came up as an '07 Triumph Speed Triple. Now I'm confused and might be pissed....... it is BLUE though...

Well, no matter what, both of you definitely have the 06 exhausts. Which who really cares, you guys are replace'n that stuff anyways, right? :-D I dunno, maybe MH is right about if they had extra 06 exhausts, they put those on their early production 07 bikes? But no matter what, 07 supposedly isn't made in blue? :hammer:

Australian bikes don't have catalysts so it it possible for our limited market, they have continued to use the same cat free exhausts from the earlier models. I think Australia and NZ are the only markets in the world that dont't require the cats, and that probably amounts to less than 400 bikes a year, total.

One way to know if the bikes are '07 or earlier is by how fast the motor fires up once you hit the starter button. As per the Cycle World article on the Tiger from the November issue.

"The ECU was jointly developed with Keihin, but the mapping is all done in-house. This is the "Second generation" Keihin unit, and the benefits of this over the previous version (fitted to the '05-06 1050s) are many. Memory is doubled, which means it can run more maps and therefore features more sophisticated fueling strategies. "The ECU now knows how long it has been since the engine was last run and adjusts it's strategy accordingly", says Warburton (Triumph's Head Project Manager). "Hot and cold startings are improved significantly. Whereas the previous-generation of software needed 1.5 seconds of cranking before starting, the new system needs only 0.4 of a second. We have also improved transient fueling control, giving better driveability, reduced emissions and reduced fuel consumption." The ECU is already used on the Daytona 675 and will be fitted to the Sprint and SPEED TRIPLE for 2007."

Another thing to point out is that the article featured commentary after taking the Tiger for a ride with a previous version, a BMW R1200GS and a Susuki V-Strom. And Cycle World really talked up the Tiger as compared to the other bikes. :-D Which gives me a warm and cozy feeling all over since I have one on order. :-D

And not that it makes a difference but I noticed in the picture of the Tiger in Cycle World the shield is in place on the '07 Tiger. :???:

Thanks, good to know.

Unfortunately it won't really help me, cause due to circumstances, I bought the bike from a dealer in a different state to where i'm currently living, so i won't get to start it before i take delivery of it :( . I'll probably get the dealer to double check it against some '06 models they have on the floor, but i'm still at their mercy as far as honesty goes...and judging by the "21 litre fuel tank" they tout, I'm not too hopeful in the honesty stakes

Well if anything, they need to ensure you it has the new improved ECU. The exhaust I would'nt worry about so much, you are bound to change it anyway, but the ECU is a huge improvement and one of the reasons you are purchasing an '07 (right?).

Yep, agreed :)

So I've organised to get an official letter from the Triumph agent confirming that the bike corresponding to my VIN has the new ECU. At least i'll have some physical evidence to back me up, if at a later a stage I discover that this is not the case.

The 11th character of your VIN number is the model year. If it was an 06, that digit would be a 6.

YOUR BIKE IS DEFINATELY AN 07 MODEL.

I can`t comment on the exhaust, because when I was there today, I didn`t have the necessary info about the difference. What the mechanics did tell me, was that they do get occasional small differences like that in batches, as some countries have different emission laws etc. and the bikes may not always end up in the country they were intended for, depending on order volumes etc. Demand in Australia is exceptionally high at the moment and some of S3`s around may have been diverted from other destinations
