I am about to finance a brand new 06 Tiger.

I have two cars Insured with All State. Been with them for over 5 years now.

My agent just quote me the bike for "around" $1500 a year.
Is this what you guys pay?

I have my 06 Tiger insured with Allstate and I'm at just under $400 a year. I have my house and three cars with them as well and discounts for the MSF courses.

$1,500? Do you have some accidents on your record? That's outrageous. I pay $300-something a year, in Oklahoma, for comprehensive. Honestly, I think my own is a little high, but I bought a brand-new '06, last Oct..

If your record is without reason for such an expensive rate, I'd do some serious shopping around.

You really have to shop when it comes to bike insurance. While living in St Loo State Farm was always the cheapest, for me, by far. Here in CA they were more than double, and Progressive was only marginally more than State Farm in St Loo. Go figure.............

The best insurance I found was from Progressive. Just under $1000 a year.

My licence says SAFE DRIVER and I have only been given 2 (two) tickets in my life. The last one over 2 years ago.

I already have my Tiger, so I went with Progressive, but I plan to keep shoping for insurance. My guess is it will be no problem to go from Progressive to a company with a better price. Has any of you done this before?

It should be clear by now that no two people's rates will be the same, even from the same company. Everything from your locations and age, to your driving record, to your credit report, will affect your rate--and sometimes I suspect even the phase of the moon.

Always shop around!

(Even with that said, $1500 does seem extraordinarily high unless you're in an unusually high theft-risk area.)

If you change to another carrier be sure to find out how much of a refund of the unused premium you'll get back. If you cancel in a relatively short period of time the proration is likely to be quite high and you'll need to factor that into your decision. If you'll save $300 annually but only get $1000 back you're better off to wait until renewal.

$1500 does seem high- you might check with your local Ridercoach or bike shop for an agent who also rides. I've had quotes on the net that were quite a bit higher than anything I could get through a local agent. I had Dairyland for years and now Modern Home- $235/year for everything on my 05. They consider it a nine month policy here even if I ride year round.
Florida may be one of those high risk states with all the oldsters careening around in their Caddiwacks.

I don't understand why my quote is so high in comparison here.

I am 42 y/o, "Safe Driver", and always on top of my game.
Don't know where the risk factor is coming from.

Maybe it is a Florida thing or a Miami thing. My Allstate agent (that I have been with for 5+ years) told my Allstate is having a lot of problems with bikes. Actually, after I gave her the VIN number of the bike, the $1500 a year went to $1500 for just 6 moths. Nice way to tell you they are not interest.

I'll keep doing my homework. For now, I'll ride and ride...
Worst case, I go with a different company next year.

SuperStock, good info. I'll take note.

I would check Markel Inusrance group. they have a specific section for motorcycle insurance. I have 2 tickets on my license within 3 years and my insurance was $426/ year. Progressive was $1008 per year. There was a huge savings and progressive was unwilling to do anything to help.

I think all of you guys are getting robbed. My premium on my 2006 Tiger is about $275 for the year. This is AFTER having a wreck last year in July on my Sprint ST.American family treated me very well:

1.Gave me $5850 for a bike I had 4 months that I had paid $6000 for.

2.Bought me a new helmet,coat,hospital bills etc...

3.Let me keep the side bags which I sold for cash.

4.Gave me sales tax riebursment up to the $5850 for the Tiger.

I was going to switch to State Farm because the auto rates were $20 a month lower. The bike rates on the other hand were $300 higher.I do not have a perfect driving record by the way.

It does pay to check around.
I had Markel when I owned my BMW GS and it was by far the cheapest...
When I bought DUCs, Markel went thru the roof.
Switched to Geico - both DUCs less than $1000 year.
Again....check around!

Hey Chyron...
It's been years, and I'm sure things have changed hugely....
But, I use to live in NW Rockford off Kilburn Ave....
Way, way back in the mid-70s...
No bikes back then...
Just an old, old Volvo...

American Family is a great company.I had them when I totaled my BMW. Wonderful and fast service. They were higher on the Tiger than Allstate so I switched.

We just moved here last June. I was sick all summer and didn't get to ride. I mean at all. Tiger has been sitting since June. Seems like a nice place, but it's cold and stays cold for weeks. We came from St. Louis. It gets cold there too, but not cold enough to put the bike away for the winter. It could +5F one day and +50F the next. Kind of like KC is, I assume. KC is great. I've got family on the Kansas side.

Insurance for my 2006 is around $200/year with Foremost. It's a policy for AARP members, plus a discount for taking the MSF rider safety course. Sometimes it pays to be old. I forget exactly what the AARP membership costs; but I know it is really cheap. It has saved me several times its cost in bike insurance every year.

Be sure your insurance carrier classifies your Tiger as a touring or dual-purpose bike. Those rates are much lower than sport bike coverage.

I pay about $600 a year for full coverage. But the DFW
area is some of the worst traffic in the country. And
I do enjoy year around riding too. I think where people live
has a bigger impact on the insurance than most people
think. By-the-way, I have Progressive.

I use State Farm for our Truck, Van and house and the best
they would do me for the Tiger was $1200 I blew them off!
My wife's and my driving records are good too.

It pays to check with an independent insurance agent who can check multiple carriers for you.

On my 07, Progressive (my previous insurer) wanted $750/year. I thought that was nuts. The dealer recommended an agent to me, and I'm now with American Modern for $299/year.

I had heard Rider/GMAC was so great, but after way too long of a phone interview, they quoted me over $900.
