Hello! I'm new to this forum, but not new to forums in general. I am an avid and regular poster over at www.vwvortex.com with over 7,000 posts. Anyways, I just bought a brand new 2005 Triumph America last week, and I am loving it. I purchased the optional tachometer, and I am wondering if it is an install that I can tackle myself, or if I should pay the service department to do it for me. I am pretty mechanically inclined with my car doing almost everything myself on it, but I have never worked on a bike. After reading the instructions included with the tach, it seems as if you have to take off the gas tank. Is that true? To me, that sounds pretty intricate. Anyways, yes, I did search, and couldn't pull up any information on this OEM Tach kit from Triumph. Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thanks guys and gals, and I'm happy to be part of the team :-D

Welcome to the site. You will have to lift the tank off to get to the connector for the tach. Its pretty easy though. Im sure you can do it. Save the money for other things you'll want in the future. Lots of specific info at BA.Com too. Check it out.

Wait - so one person says I just have to lift the chrome dash, and one person says I have to lift the tank. Ahh - which one is it? I'll guess I'll just take off the chrome dash first and check. I'll go to the tank next if I can't do it the first way.

No need to take the tank off. Unscrew the chrome dash cover & there will be 2 pugs to use for the tacho.

If it take you any longer than 10 minutes from start to finish ,, u have gone too far unbolting stuff.

Now that you are good at popping the tank nacelle off go in and install the LED's that replace those dim bulbs for O.P., T.S., and nuetral lights.

Don't do the high beam light it will be way too bright at night!

One of the best mod that I have made to my bikes.

I have an '05 America and I installed the tach myself. You DO NOT NEED TO REMEVE THE TANK! The only thing you have to remove is the chrome cover that the tach installs in. You can instll the tach yourself in about 10 minutes. It's very easy.....just plug and go.

The confusion lies with the instructions that first ask how many connectors you have on your harness. Then they go into how to wire in the new harness, but of course that was not necessary on mine, just plug and play. Hope yours is the same.

I just ran across this thread as I started my Tach install on my '07... Instrucitons and kit comes with a new wire harness and a cable to connect into the "ignitor". At 12am I was too tired to search for hte ignitor beyond the obvious, so I buttoned up my bike and decided to try again today.

However, are you guys saying that the harness on my America may already have a plug for the Tach, that is plug-n-play and not requiring the whole harness, wire effort.

*update* I checked the harness in the console when I got home, and low-and-belhold, it really was as easy as plugging in 2 connectors. If only the Triumph instructions would have said this, instead of leading down another path... Yippie! Tach works great. I really have grown to appreciate triumphrat.net over the years.

Sigmapifsc: Your bike is a tad old now, finding NOS parts may be a challenge. Shop ebay, amazon, post 'wanted' in our classifieds, etc. Probably some available at bike salvage yards, but probably not too cheap, either ! I have one, but it's not for sale, even though I use a 'tiny tach' digital one for my tuning efforts. Good Luck in your search.;)
