Yes, I am brand new here so please be gentle !
I am taking delivery of my new Storm on 1/18/12 and would promptly like to change the exhaust and intake.
Questions that arise:
1) Are the cats in the mufflers or headpipes ---reason for asking is that I would like to remove them.
2) When both intake and exhaust are modified to flow more air and provide a bit more power,what needs to be done to the ignition to balance the air/fuel mixture ?
3) Any other advice for the planned changes would be more than welcome---------

1. There is a "catbox" that both header pipes connect to under the bike frame. (you can't miss it)
2. You will need the TORS download from your dealer or a dyno tune.
3. Start reading on here.

Iam not sure what to do now. Do I ask the dealer for a TORS ? What do I begin reading ? Do I dispose of the cat box ? If so --How ?
....Were I more familiar with Triumphs ,in general, These questions would probably be unnecessary---but,right now, I am totally lost and have no starting point.
....I apologise for not being better informed but -----I am here because I am brand new to Triumph cycles and and no have clue as to the acronyms and initialisms used and accepted on this forum. Please help from a beginners point if view and understanding. :eek::confused:

TOR stands for "Triumph Off Road" which is what they call their performance exhaust systems. Along with changing to this or another aftermarket exhaust you will will want the TOR tune for the computer.

Why do you want to remove the cat? Some people do, and some people don't, but get some miles on the bike before you decide that it is necessary for you. You may find that new mufflers and tune might be enough for you.

..I thank you for the info. ! Sounds like a good and simple aproach to my questions. Being familiar with only H.D. I was concerned about "heat". Guess that is a problem not shared by Triumph---water cooling and all ! If the cats create no heat threat---I can't imagine that removal would be necessary. Maybe just pipes for the noise factor;I can't go to total silence overnight ! Open intake can't hurt the power either.
...Thank you for the straight forward solution to what I thought might have been a major undertaking. :)

Yeah heat is not an issue with the cat. Good luck with your new ride, and keep us posted on what exhaust you choose. There are a lot of guys here that can give you opinions on the different choices out there. I'm still running the stock pipes on my bird, so I'll let the others chime in.

Hi flicker the pipes i have are the short TORS & I still have the cat,I just love the sound she makes. I reckon if you still want louder then taking the cat off will increase it slightly, If you are new to Triumphs then your in for a treat :)

congrats on the storm. got my 12 model back a few months and i just recently added the short tors, factory hi flo filter, and tune. bike runs great and heat is not an issue. just came off years of harleys and was always fighting the heat, especially being down in the south. ride the break-in stock and read up on your options. be aware that there are very few options when you compare to all the options you had with your hd. one thing i've been told about the new tors is that after 3-4k miles, the packing will start to dissapate and they will sound even better. good luck and ride safe...

You have to be some what careful removing the cat . If you dont add some kind of crossover pipe or some such gizmo (not technical but remember reading) you will lose all the torque due to lack of back pressure.

Someone did a test on the cat itself, Mad angler I think it was and he found the cat to be prety much flow free and not impeding the performance at all. Ok youll save 20lb or whatever it is . So I think his conclusion was its pointless just in case you lose too much torque. (Mad is god engineer type knows his stuff)

Maybe you should add free flowing pipes ie the TORs or whatever pipes u fancy and the high flow filter first and see if you like the sound before you start doing nasty things to your new bike that might completey screw it up.

There have been people who have removed the cat and used the TOR tune but they definatly didnt run the bike straight through, not that I remember anyway. If they did they had some type of pipe constriction to create the needed back pressure but no one makes this for the TBird so you into DIY.

The odd thing about the TBird compared to the HD is that the TBird seems to be prety much optimised straight from the factory to run at optimal performance . It dosnt need too much playing with to get what its capable of or indeed the thousands of extra (insert currency of your choice) to get that extra ummph.

High torque 115 f/lb and 100+ bhp on the Storm and BB Birds and I can honestly say from nearly 3 years of having the Bird myself I havnt heard too many people bothering with takeing the cat off or indeed extolling the virtues of doing such a thing.

The biggest performance increase most have found is the BB kit if you have a standard 1600 , the Tors (short seems to be better from some accounts), high flow filter with the rubber seal taken off the airbox and some say the actually air box removal from under the seat . Some even say that can have negative results on the torque so be carefull of that too.

If Daz is around he can confirm or deny most of what I have waffled here as most of this is from 2 1/2 years of rembering old posts and personal experience.

Spose Id better say what ive got after all that then, BB kit, short TORs ,high flow filter and the rubber band around the air filter taken off. 1700 tor tune of course.

The best thing about this combo IMHO, is that when riding normaly I get a nice deep throaty rumble that dosnt anoy anyone . Open the throttle and hear me scream . Tunnels are best for that of course lol.

Can you tell me please, is there really a huge difference between the high flow air filter and the stock filter? Seems like such a simple thing to get more oomph.

In all honesty Blindaussie? Not a lot . Do you know what is the best performance increase per price I found? Taking the rubber seal off the airbox as advised by Dazzco some year or so ago.

I shall relate a story I posted on another forum that is never to be mentioned here for fear of the men in black turning up on my doorstep with the flashy thing ,joke mods ok joking.

Anyway , I took the rubber seal off my airfilter just to see if I noticed anythng one day and like all these things didnt really feel anything. My brother has a TBird , same spec same pipes high flow filter BB kit but the slower version in Black not the Blue with cream.

So we ride for a few months doing the usual hack it from time to time . Burning from lights ect all the totaly irrisponcible things "they" tell the non riders of the world about. Anyhow to the point. I always beat my brother off the line . I was always a bike lengh ahead of him . I could always catch him up if he opened up on the road.

Didnt really think much of it until I remembered and he moaned . The rubber seal on the air filter was the only thing that was different. So I took his off and we went for a ride. I can still beat him off the line most of the time because im faster with the clutch. I cant gain on him when he opens up and if he opens a gap I cant close it.

That says to me the rubber seal gives you a bit extra for absolutly nothing.

The air filter. Hey it costs nothing really so what has anyone got to lose and with the TORs why wouldnt you free the air flow a bit?

I got a KN speedmaster high flow airfilter and it cost , £30 or something. It is slightly too long but with a bit of messing (about 5 seconds of messing) it fits.

My thanks to all who chimed in on my questions ! Seems like I may have finally made a good decision on bike manufacturers ; none of the replys here sounded anything even similiar to what I would hear on the Harley forum,thank goodness !
I will take the advice to ride it stock and then decide on upgrades, if any ! Triumph appears to have avoided most all the common ailments that Harleys have developed !
I'll post later because------my new Triumph will be delivered in about thirty minutes !
