Two weeks ago I was comtemplating purchasing one, and I decided what good would it do.

Ironically after leaving a meeting where one of the topics was traffic calming and how people speed along this stretch of road, I got a ticket there not more than 30 minutes after biting my tongue listening to people complain about the speeders. It's marked 45 mph, I typically hit it around 80.

They didn't even cut me a break, I was ONLY 17 over this time. No wonder my insurance goes up each year.

I've always considered detectors cheap insurance but where do people put them on Speedy? Plus, nobody I know makes a weatherproof model. Hmmm, that might be a good business plan, sell weatherized Valentine 1 & Escort detectors.

I have a tank bag (for the Speedy) and have used it for detectors with an ear plug accessory-simple safe and no one can see it(cops). not aproblem on the Speedy cuz it is so fast no cops around here even fool with me. (HA HA) The State guys are concentrated in several areas on the interstates I 20 and I 65, and seem to be doing major speed traps out there with LASER. I do not ride the big roads much so I just have to watch out for the local smokeys. Just take it easy. In Valentine we Trust!

This was just one place I found surfing online the other day. Escort radar detector mounted to the handlebars, connected to the accessory power cable and the H.A.R.D. transmitter which sends a signal to a receiver mounted inside your helmet. Also a M20 X-Treme laser jammer with front and rear modules. Looks amazing but the whole setup costs big bucks, prob over $1,000 for all 3 pieces.

Just guessing: You weren't on the bike.
No, I was in my truck, but it's my fifth speeding ticket in the last 2 years, on top of a faulty equipment (he was being nice on that one), and the illegal passing (again nice on that one... but I'm still proud of that ticket). I passed a cop coming off a mountain pass, doing almost 100 mph. The best part was that it was in front of people I was riding with.

I saw that laser jamming thing-a-ma-bob and gave it considerable thought. Then I also thought about the cost of that, versus the cost of not stopping. One more ticket and I'm out of points, depending on how my day in court goes.

To mount a radar detector I considered making a bracket the fits into the holes on my triple tree where the risers were. I changed to clip on's. I'm going to make a mount for my GPS some day for the other hole.

For the answer to the weather proofing and mounts, I'd check out the Rider's Warehouse (Aerostich guys). In their catalog they actually have some stuff that works for this. If anything their catalog is pretty funny to read.

If I were to get a radar detector for speedy, I would make a mounting bracket that would sandwich between the left mirror base and mount. Those of you who took off the stock mirror would simply mount the bracket with a short bolt. Then I would hook up the HARD system. I would mount the detector so it could be quickly unhooked whenever I stopped, or it started to rain, and slip it in my pocket or bag. The key is easy on and off the bike, and a really cheap way to mount it.

Down here in Florida we have these toll detectors, called Sunpass. I tried different ways to mount one on speedy, but couldn't get reliable readings going through the toll booths. I started tucking it inside my jacket, on top of my right shoulder pad. Now it works like a champ, and I don't have to worry about forgetting it! :-D :-D

another way of mounting i was considering for a camera would be using the factory risers and cut the old handle bar at each end and use barend plugs to finish it. that way you would have a nice solid bar mount in the middle with nothing sticking out past the risers....i'm running clip-ons by the way....but i guess you could still mount something there if running standard bars.

i was able to walk...ride....away from a ticket.....going to work in the morning....jump on the on-ramp onto I40 and immediately cut across three lanes to get around traffic and caught up to the next group of traffic ahead....next thing i knew i had an unmarked cop on my ass...i pull over...take my helmet off...and get ready to pull out my papers and the cop comes up and asks me if i knew why he pulled me over...*speeding?*.....i was correct....turns out he had me on camera cutting across the three lanes and speeding up to 85mph....dammit. then he asks me if i have any tickets....still no papers or license was asked for yet...i told him no....he tells me its my lucky day and he liked my bike....gets in his car and takes off! only problem after that was trying not to pass him when i caught up to him. dang

i only got one speeding ticket :knock on wood: i was on 355 around the chicagoland area. i was in my evo at the time doing 130mph and the cop pulled me over and clocked me at 108. 53mph over the limit. it was a class A misdemenor...when i first got my liscense a old guy i know said "if your going to speed dont be a pu$$y about it, make sure your going at least 50 over, then you can get lawyers involved" my ticket was only 120 bucks but my lawyer was 1000 bucks

i just take it easy when you shouldnt be speeding, so i dont see a radar detector in my furture.

Escort sells a small speaker (2" cubed) that plugs into the Passport.
You can easily fashion a bracket to mount it on the handlebar.
It's LOUD and the volume is controlled by the passport.
You can hear it at any speed with earplugs in.
Escort doesn't advertise it but you can call them and order it. About $30.
Also, a plastic sandwich bag over the Escort makes it waterproof.

I would do some research to see if a laser detector/deflector really defeats a laser. I personally can't see how it would work. I have shot cars before and could not get a reading on them and I wondered why. When people see me and slam their brakes it is hard to get a reading until they stop decellerating. Most people don't see me until I already shot them, packed up and got ready to chase them. I have hit vehicles out to 3000 feet. Vehicles with no front license plates can be difficult at times. Corvettes and pointy nosed cars are sometimes difficult. Sportbikes are not hard to get locks on. Cruisers with no windshield can be difficult. Helmets are great targets. I can usually get a lock on a helmet coming or going. I'd like to shoot a car or bike that I knew had a laser jammer fitted. Just for my own piece of mind. I know that I have nailed numerous cars with radar detectors fitted.
