My Tiger is 3 on 17 January!!

In the UK this means the first of what will be an annual inspection every January.

As this inspection can be done any time in the month before it is due I took the bike in on Dec 31. But first I talked to the tester about my HID on dip.

Take it off for the test I was told, it has to be failed. He agreed it is stupid, but VOSA has issued a specific advisory to all tsting stations. HID on main, or auxillary lights are fine, no problem. But not dip.

So, went home, took it off - not a problem, about half an hour to take the bulb out and replace with a stock bulb.

The bike passed, so I got home and put the HID back. Something to do every winter!!

Actually that sounds quite sensible especially with a bike like the Tiger with longish travel suspension. Even HID lamps on cars with the self levelling feature can be a real pain when you meet them coming over speed humps etc.

If you read the MOT,purely a legal thing when tested and that you have had it done, the moment your round the corner it's null and void and it's you thats liable.

The important part, does the tester know you,do you know him and I don't mean on a yearly basis, since the intoduction of the computerisation of MOT's, things e'r shall we say have become a little more difficult!!!,but not insermountable!!,the down side for the dealer because there is a time limit he can only do so many a day.

I can understand the dip thing although I've had one on another bike for a long time,HID main beam is just bonkers, there isn't anyone out there that can see that far!!!

As for telling the tester, you don't tell him,he doesn't ask you,as soon as you mention it,he'll trot out the party line and your stuffed, otherwise he'll bust a gut to get you done and off the premises.

New regs??
I read somewhere a while back of the changes to the MOT agreed by VOSA to do with HID lights and Chiping ECU's.

The HID lights will need to be factory fit with a self levelling device.
The changes are aimed specifically at the after market fitted, and will be an automatic fail if fitted without the self levelling.
Sorry I can't be more specific but I can't remember who or where
I heard saw it!:D

Yeah Winger you're right but the difference is that as of 2012 the MOT Tester and Police will have specific legislation relating to them as oposed to just the lighting Regs they have now, with regards to beam pattern aim etc.

Another option, though not as bright as HID, but keeps you legal if plod is bored around your way, are the Osram night stalker or Philips hi power bulbs, I was a bit sceptical about how much brighter a standard 55/60w bulb could be, but the light intensity and distance of beam is VERY noticible! and you don't have to change them every VOSA inspection or any time the local law ienforcement agency decides its easier to nick motor cyclists than tracking down burgalars etc.

Osram Night Breaker, +1 here ( Night Stalker something very different!):D
Whoops!
Shouldn't try to multi task and watch vampire movies with the kids while typing on a technical forum...! better try to figure out a safer type of movie to watch if I am going to try and multi-task, maybe I can get my daughters to watch gone in 60 seconds instead!!
They and their mother do say that men can't multi task, Oh well I'm just off on the bike to do some cooking (local chinese looks promising) ;~)

Proposed change to HID MoT

I've just been pointed at this which contains a summary of proposed MoT changes.

Entry 21 makes interesting reading, although I think it may refer only to 4 wheel vehicles.

Interesting that they actually inspect bikes in the UK, the inspections I've had in the states, they look at the tires, tell me to do the turn signals,. and put a sticker on it.
