I am without a doubt turning into a fat bastard. :( When I got married 7 yrs ago, I was 175 lbs, now my fat ass is a whop'n 205 lbs! :hammer: My job hasn't helped, I used to do much more physical work, not the most physical thing I do at work is all of the post'n I do right here. I've started doing a little jogging this week, and my legs feel like freak'n jello now. I know I need to change my eating habits also, but what do you finely tuned athletes to do to keep yerselves in such great shape? Gimme some ideas, I'd alteast like to be down to 190 lbs or so by my bday. I need to sumt'n so that speedy can still haul my ass around. Of course, if I just keep git'n fatter, I guess that'd be a good excuse fer the purchase of a Rocket, eh? :-D

Hey Cheap.

I empathise man. The last few years I have been cultivating the spare tyre (160/70 zr17).
My job involves me being constantly around stick thin drop dead georgeous dancers all day (hard life 'eh) so I like to keep the tyre under control. To achieve this I started taking contemporary dance classes a few times a week. My god that soon sweated the pounds off. Jumping round a hot dance studio for 1.5 hours will sort you out.
Also my girlfriend is a Pilates instructor so she practices her class on me occaisionally. I still eat and drink my fill but manage to keep the flab at bay a little.

Now, before anyone else gets the jibe in, where's my leotard and tutu?

Cheapie, easiest thing is join a gym. That way when ya get tired you can gaze at the fantails.

Watch the running though. Can cause more damage than good. Start light with some jogging sure, but also some static stuff - push ups and sit ups. Follow you leanings from there.

Good luck.

Forget the fad diets, etc. You know, the ones where you cut ALL the carbs, or ALL the fat, or eat only carbs and fat and cut ALL the protein.

You need a balance or you're gonna get sick, and within that balance, the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consumer. That's it - there is no secret to it, no magic mystery formula.

Our bass player is pushin' 300 pounds. About twice a year, he and his wife go on the South Beach diet and go on and on about how much weight they're losin'. Then they stop, and within a month, they're heavier than when they started. Another time, they tried Suddenly Slim. Not sure what was in the "shakes," but hey sh*t like geese and lost a whole lotta weight. Of course, both of 'em were nearly hospitalized for dehydration too, but oh well, eh?

Don't get caught up in the hype (NutriSystem, Suddenly Slim, etc.) The solution is simple and doesn't cost anything (which is good, since you're a cheapbastard): Eat less. Move more.

Within that simple solution are endless possibilities. If you move more, for instance, you can eat somewhat more and still lose weight than if you move less. If you move less, you'd better be eating a lot less. What you eat and how you move (whether it's weights, running, or Naked Tai Chi) will affect the speed, healthiness, and permanency of weight loss.

But the bottom line is still eat less, move more.

Buy some weights, and work out hard for 6-90 minutes 3-5 times a week, and cut back a bit on your portion size at the same time. It works.

UNLESS, that form of exercise is something you hate. Then you'll quit after a few days/weeks, have wasted your money, and be right back where you started. Find some form of regular exercise that you enjoy, or can tolerate well enough for it to become habitual. Burn more calories and keep your intake the same or a little lower, and you will lose fat. Period.

I don't diet, I eat whatever I want, just not as much of it as before. Weighed in at 175 when married 15 years ago. Now, with two kids, an easier job (Movin up!) I weigh 215lbs. Hey, I like junk food, hate gyms, weight lifting sucks. When I ride my bicycle I can eat what I want and get back down to 175lbs. Start slow, build up distance and before you know it you'll be commuting to work three times a week on your bicycle and doing 100 mile rides on Saturday morning. Eat all the bacon and hamburgers and candy and ice cream you want. Check out your local bicycle shop for a club. My bicycling starts back this week.

follow the basic laws of life:

Never eat anything larger than your head.
If it's in a box, bag or can-don't eat it.
If it's lyed, fried or dyed-don't eat it.
Eat fresh food and used cold pressed oils.

I hate gym's so I bought a DR650 dual sport..turns out to be a heck of a workout, dropped 20 pounds pretty quick.

Or

you could date a bi-polar manic sex addict.....

Generally speaking, most Americans can lose weight by walking 20 minutes a day and cutting all soda and pastries out of their diet.

But if you are an active person already and you want to get into better shape, I have two suggestions.

Set a goal. Pick an event a few months from now to train for, a race, a fun run, bicycle race or a charity event of some kind. Even planning a hike to a local peak is a good goal. Get your spouse or a buddy to sign up too. That gives you a point in time to focus on, and if you do one every few months you can track your progress.

You also need to learn what your base metabolic rate is and how many calories you can take in versus how many you burn. You do this once, and it can be an estimate. You can use
Fitday.com, it's free.

You can find out what the calorie content of common foods are at that site also. That will help you plan what you eat. That is key. Most fat people eat whatever looks good and is in front of them. Which is why they are fat. If you want to be fit, it takes effort. No shortcuts. Good luck.

Definitely some good points here. And a lot of fatbastards. :-D

Steve's advice is excellent, but he's also a disciplined Army boy. Most of us are a lot lazier than he is.

The advice to avoid the fad diets is also good, but there are some good points to the fad diets, too. Particularly, avoiding high-glycemic foods. As much as it pains me to say it, watch the beer intake. My boss lost 50 pounds just by switching from beer to red wine. Now, I would never recommend anything that drastic, but I would suggest taking it easy on the beer.

Also along the same lines, keep an eye out for sugar! The stuff is everywhere, from peanut butter to bread, to pasta sauce, to most tasty beverages. If something has an "-ose" in it (glucose, fructose, etc.) don't eat it! Try to eat more high-fiber foods. If a bread or cereal has less than 2 grams of fiber per serving, I usually avoid it. Pasta isn't supposed to be too bad, but Barilla has a line called Barilla Plus that is high in protein, fiber and omega 3's, and it's remarkably good. It even passes my wife's strict pasta guidelines. She'd never let me buy whole wheat pasta.

Of course, you gotta move. I really don't think you need four hours/day of exercise, but you have to do something. I usually do about 30 minutes of cardio twice/week, work the weights 2 or 3 times a week and try to do something, even if it's just stretching and some sit-ups on the remaining days. Don't kill yourself or you'll hate doing it. If you get in a habit of doing a little something every day, it won't feel right if you skip a day. That's a good thing.

I forgot! Almost as important as the other stuff - try to keep a regular schedule as far as eating and sleeping goes. Even more important, get enough sleep at night. Study after study shows that lack of sleep goes with being overweight. And, you've heard it since you were a kid - breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eat a healthy one to jump-start your metabolism.

Don't eat processed foods, don't eat fast food, don't eat junk food, don't drink cheap crappy beer. quit worrying about your weight and be happy with who you are, you're going to die anyway.

But then, don't take my word for it, I'm pretty chunky myself.

Nochicanes is spot-on the ball. Forget all the gym junk and fads. It's what you put in and what you burn off and the ratio. It really is that simple.

Fresh fruit and vegetables
Fish
Wholemeal bread
Nuts

Exercises - slow walking then build up to speed walking. It's stamina you want to energy power and big muscles.

You, like us all, are a monkey so eat like one. Just don't go swinging from any chandeliers.

Yours at 140lbs.

Eat less do more! simple realy then. Get a dog. I'm slowly slipping into tubby middle age (actualy I don't know about the tubby but the slipping bit is happening. Gravity is getting the better of me) but walking a dog every day certainly keeps me moving.

I hear what you're sayin' Cheapbastard. I started playing softball with my alumni team a couple years ago and everything was fine until I tried to run really fast with cleats on. I thought someone took a medieval torture device and ripped the muscles out of my thighs. Lesson learned: stretch before any exercising.

I have lost 48lbs over a period of three years, how, just got off my butt and walked a lot more than I used too and cut down on food intake, I break all the rules and dont eat breakfast but have toast at around ten, I will eat a sandwich for lunch around 1330 and one small hot meal in the evening I can not eat anywhere near the amount i used to, seems your stomach shrinks!, sounds boring but I still eat what I want just got used to eating less of it, and loose it slowly that way it stays off. Fat is like fuel the only way to get rid of it is to use more calories than you put in.

R200Pilot is spot on, you need to move, we're made to move not sit in offices all day or stand around. It's modern life that's killing us where you buy everything in a supermarket that's had the hell processed out of it.

I've done office time, sitting in aircraft time, just puts weight on. I now move for a living and been the same weight the last 8 years which is correct for my height. 85kg. (187 lbs).

As Arch says, we're monkeys, eat the odd banana and move.

Hey cheap...

While I'm not a fitness celebrity or anything, I think that I might have a suggestion. I see you're an avid computer user (judging by how fast you made it to SOTP Vintage Series). :-D

Try Weight Watchers online. It tracks your food intake, has a food calculator, a pretty good database for miscellanious food, it tracks your exercise and if gives you recipies and suggestions for better weight loss. I think it work pretty good!

...and by the way; motorcycle riding counts as an exercise!!! :upthumb: :-D
