Between the stator and the Clutch. The metal piece that wraps around the clutch (sort of) with a threaded end. If any of you can tell me what this is I would be appreciative. It's a 1978 T140E

primary part

That (the large thing) is the gear shift shaft. you have a left hand shifting bike made after 1975. You will need the matching primary cover with a hole in it
It is possible to covert this engine back to right hand shift, but you will need a long list of parts.
Good luck, Todd

My engine appears to have a shifting shaft on the right side too. The shaft on the left side (pictured above) does not seem to be connected to anything. It swings up and down freely, and I have not tackled the gear box yet. Is this normal? Lastly. Do can you offer an advice for taking the left side shifting shaft out, for a rebuild? I am following Wes Whites rebuild of a 650 video and the Haynes Shop Manual, neither of which mentions how to remove this piece (or at least I have been fruitless in finding any info)

Thanks,
