Hello to all!
this is my first post, of many, I'm sure. I bought my '01 Sprint 2 months ago and after a whirlwind romance, was told by the local vicar that it is impossible to marry a motorbike! The audacity of him! Well, we're in love and that's that! This bike is perfect for me and I wouldn't change anything........except the grips. (check back in the future for other grumbles, but for now just the grips) They are too thin, and after 30 minutes riding my fingers start to cramp. I've been to the local dealers (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki etc) and as soon as they learn it's a Triumph the head shaking starts. Can anyone offer any answers? Tried and tested only please. Now, the BOOKS part. Haynes make a manual for the Sprint, but it only does upto '00. Were there many changes in '01? Will that manual be ok? At $37 it needs to be spot on! Finally, the "everything in between" bit of the title is anything at all you want to tell me or think I should know about my new baby. Thanks for reading.Don't know what these "smilies" things are, but they're free so I'll use one! Ride safe

Congrats on your new ride... You're gonna love this bike mate. I too have the '01 (British Racing Green...the fastest color). My name is Lee too...spooky coincidence?

I would suggest changing out the countersprocket to an 18T. It will raise your acceleration and make it seems like a whole new bike when you cranks that throttle.

I also ehave Genmar risers, staintune pipe and off road tune on my bike.

As for books...get the triumph shop manual... always better than the haynes manual in my experience. They have a few on eBay right now actually.

Welcome aboard and ride safe mate

A great bike. I can understand your lust/love. As for the grips - Have you tried a throttle rocker or (should I suggest) just relax a bit whilst in the moment of lust and loosen your grip a little!!

Sometimes I fine that my hands get tired. I focus on relaxing my grip and enjoying the ride.

:-D :-D :-D :-D I am trying to get my monies worth!!

I found the grips a bit too hard as well,I put on some Pro-grip gel grips $10 . I got them on 2 of our bikes now. I think you can get them on line at the motorcyclesuperstore.(sorry i don`t have a link)
Gen-mar risers, these grips, and i have no more sore wrists or hand cramps.

I swapped out the grips on mine for some cheap grips I picked up at the local Honda/Kwaka dealer that were quite a bit softer. Grips are grips, pretty much any set will work. They worked wonders for my hands. Changing out the grips was pretty easy. I removed the bar end weights (actually, Throttlemeister), then pulled up the edges of the grips and dribbled some isopropyl alcohol underneath. They came right off with minimal effort. Then, I dripped some more isopropyl (not TOO much) over the bars and the inside of the new grips, and they slid right on. I then took a can of air duster (the kind you use to clean out computer cases) and sprayed it under the grips until the alcohol was dry. No glue, no mess, no fuss. Just wait a couple of hours before riding for the alcohol to dry completely, or else when you twist the grip it'll slide around. It's rock solid after it dries, though.

Welcome Fire-Limey.... strange monica that one, are you a Brit firefighter in the US, or is that too straigtforward :) :jest:

As DaveM said, there's a lot of good info around here on the lovely triples from Hinckley, and even a few folk who know a bit about them!

Feel free to post as often as you need a fix and you can be as liberal or sparing of the smilies we you like :-D

Enjoy the rider!

Welcome FireLimey.

I don't know if they are larger, but I have the heated grips, and although I do suffer from cramp occasionally, I think it is more to do with holding on tight so I don't become separated from my baby.

Disgusiting isn't it.... no church wedding, and it's also forbidden in a civil ceremony. Guess I will just have to marry my partner and make sure that the going away vehicle is my other love!!

Enjoy your time together.

BTW. I think the pre '02 models had the 18T sprocket as standard, but if you remove the black cover, it should be stamped on it!

I can not comment on the sprocket, I have an '05. Fun, fun is all I can say. Grips are easy, if you just work the old ones a bit usually they will slide off (after weights removed), or just cut them off, I was not planning on re-using the old ones, I just cut them off. My new gel grips I sprayed a bit of hair spray into them, they slid on like butter, left them an hour in the sun, and the spray goes from slippery to glue. Worked good and that was the suggestion online I found. Really easy, just find the 7/8 or what ever the bar size is and your away.

Number one, enjoy!

hey guys
thanks for all the info and the welcome. What a great bunch of chaps you are! I'm going to try out some new grips tomorrow. Trotsky, where in Ca are you? My old man has houses in Sausolito and Shelter Cove so I'm over there often. Russ, the credo KISS was in my mind when coming up with Fire-Limey, and you got it right. Brit who crawls into burning buildings in New Jersey. Thanks again guys :-D

I am in the Bay area right now...Sausilito is just a golden gate bridge away. Am heading up to Portland at the end of the month though. Wife and I bought a house up there and the big move happens at Thanksgiving. Gonna be hard to give up these great roads and even bettter weather :(

Good choice

You can ride a bike anytime you want.

It won't give you sh_t when you ride another bike

You can park it for months without looking at it then hop on it and go for hours.

The list is endless

Trotsky, what haddi man wrote is the way change grips too,but i use wd-40,just wedge the spray tube up the grip and give it a shot it comes off easily, then i use spray paint in side the new grips for glue.
evan being painted on ,i`ve never had any trouble getting them off again,Its about 10min job . and i usally let them dry overnight.
the hair spray sounds intresting tho
