Hi all. I'm very close to buying a Triumph Thunderbird Storm. I'm looking at the Matte Black. I'm considering adding: Dresser Bars, Highway Pegs and Saddlebags. Do you guys have any watch-outs on the above? Any concerns on the dresser bar and pegs going into turns and scraping or is there enough clearance? I honestly like the look without saddlebags, but I want to use the bike and drive to work and feel that I can throw my computer, notebooks, etc. in and not worry about carrying a heavy backpack on my back. Any other accessories that I should be looking into? Any concerns on the Matte black paint and its upkeep? How much can I expect to negotiate on price? Sorry, for all the newbie questions, but I'd love to have your guys' help, so that I can join the club. Thanks in advance.

The paint in general on the Thunderbird scratches very easily. This is due to the environmenal regulations in place where it is built. Since Triumph can't use the right solvents in the process the end result is a softer finish. The colors that look the best are the lighter colors as you can't see the scratches as easily. On the Storm whether you go with the gloss or the matte you are going to see scratches and blemishes. I think the matte would be worse though as any little smudge or fingerprint is going to stick out.

As for the crash/dresser bars I have them on the front. The hug pretty close to the bike, so no issues there with scraping. I don't have highway pegs though.

Every dealer is different regarding price negotiating. My advice there is keep a close eye on the extra fees. A nice discount off the price can easily be added back on with all the miscelaneous bull$h!t fees.

Just one comment on the matt black....I had a blue/white 1600 for 2 years and traded it in on a matt black storm last month.......Almost got scared off by all the negative posts on the paint..I just came back from a 700 mile trip to Redding Calif from San Jose...Went through the "bug capital of Calif" and when I got home the bike look like some kind of art project....pelted with a good assortment of the little critters....Sprayed it down with Windex, let it set, lightly wiped with a microfibre and it looks perfect. 20 min job...With the blue/white it would have been over an hour of wash, dry, polish, wipe, wax, wipe etc. DO NOT let the matt finish bother you..plus I guarantee you will get many more compliments on how good it looks...Go for it, you will love the bike (must add--short tors and air filter kit--WOW.....)

I like both black versions. I have the gloss but the dealer at the time just had that so saved me the trouble of picking which black. Each to there own on color. I put bags on it after a couple of months as just convenient. Much prefer the look without. For me I did not yet need highway pegs. I am only 5' 11" and the regular pegs sit a nice comfort level forward. Have rode a couple of days over 300 miles and been ok. Good luck with the new purchase. Some great advice on this forum but some things are just personal taste.

I just put in my order for the gloss black Storm. Is there anyone in the TB universe that's running the stock pipes? If so, are they too quiet to get proper feedback when shifting (i.e., RPMs)? Also, is there a possibility of the headers getting blue on this bike?

Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks, GregLi. I ordered the long TORS. I want the sound and performance, but not so Lou's that it wears on me after a more lengthy ride.

Matt black here with crash bars, hi way pegs, short tors. No problem at all. If you don't like the saddlebags (i don't either) you might look at one of the hard tour paks you can add. Use during the week when you need it and remove for the weekends.....also, on mine i got 1000 off when i bought it new 2012. Of course it didn't hurt i was there about 3 months earlier buying a tiger 1050 too..

Got My Wheels

Well, fellas, I got my bike. 2012 Matte Black Thunderbird Storm. It had been awhile since I'd ridden (10+ years), so I was a little nervous picking it up (had a 70 mile ride back and hadn't even taken a test ride; what was I thinking?). But within a couple of stop lights on the way home, I felt at home and was reassured that I made the right purchase.

So what was the final price you negotiated?
I got it for $15K including Dresser Bar, Highway Peg Mounts, Adjustable Highway Pegs and Saddle Bags installed. Only the dealer didn't have the accessories in time for when I picked it up (I think he went with the cheap shipping after all of our negotiating), so they'll install the accessories when I go back for my 500-mile service.

Thanks to all of you for helping me take the plunge. I really appreciate it.
