I thought I'd pass this little gem on to you.

I've been trying to burn a few c.d.'s using Nero 6.6 or Windoze Media Player 11. Man, what a chore! One Cat Stevens album took over two hours! In desperation I went searching the net and tried out a few applications. I then came across Spesoft CD Ripper. Wow! Awesome and incredible. Instead of two hours I had a copy saved in MP3 format in 15 minutes.

Given that my Tosh is getting on for four years old I am impressed.

It has a very simple interface and does the job without any hassle and you can work in the background. It's been given good reviews and is malaware free. The dudes who developed it are based in the U.K.

Yes it is FREE

Now back to Cat Stevens - what a voice!

Yeah Mare but Macs are cleverer than PCs.

I think with iTunes, you can do in IMPORT from CD to MP3.

iTunes is available for free in Mac or PC flavours.

Not that I condone ripping of discs....but....

Anyone with a Mac have a copy of MACTHERIPPER V3.0r13

Click - drag. Click - drag. Even I can do that! I even learned to use the screwy touchpad thingy. Now I only have to use 2 fingers as opposed to a whole mousehand...

I just go in to my local music shop tell my man Warren what Motorhead CD I want then a week or two later pick it up. But I did give him a big fright last week when I ordered two Jethro Tull CD's. when I park my bike on the footpath out side the shop some one all ways looks at her and says nice things which make my head swell with pride. and you don't get that downloading/stealing music from the net.

Arch, get iTunes and it telepathically knows when you want a cd ripping to your library and hey presto. Even if you don't own the CD :-D

Lets start a PC vs Mac debate / war!!

MACS ARE FAR SUPERIOR, we may be lesser in numbers but our weapons are far more advanced. :hammer:

I used to be a big Mac fan but when I see all the short lived designer junk Mr. Ego has been producing it made me change my mind.

Did anybody see or hear the Mac Expo in 'Frisco? It was a truly sad and sorry state of affairs. To hear so called adults yelling and a holloring every few minutes about a cell phone was just so pathetic and undignified. For a moment I could have been fooled into thinking that a genius has stepped up on stage and annouced a cure for cancer.

Sad people, very sad people.

Oh I agree with ya there. I don't particularly like the hype with iPods (although I do have one, its the simpleist model and while it works i have no desire to get a newer one). The iPhone is yet another useless gadget that marketing departments have decided we must need.

My alleigence is won by the fact Apple make hardare and software that continues to do the job and do it well without crashes, reboots, virus intervention, large amounts of 3rd party software and with day to day stability.

My computer is a huge part of my livelyhood. I had PCs for years and always felt cheated. two years ago I got my first and current Mac and it has never let me down even when I run it to within an inch of its life (and when you work with 24+ tracks of large, high quality audio files and several software MIDI instruments all at the same time, that inch is regularly reached).

Any windows based hardware would have had me with even less hair and no work within months.

Apple built its product on stability and real world useability, but things seem to be getting a little sidetracked these days. Lets hope Mr Jobbs wakes up and smells the incredibly expensive coffee soon.

Wow! I do go on sometimes... :)

Got a little off topic, sorry.

Wayne, agree with you about reliability - especially the older models. I still have a Message Pad (curses Jobs for dumping it), two black and *********** books which when they don't start-up get thrown across the meadow - always works and and an ancient Power PC. The latter although wonky still starts and closes down faster than a modern Windoze.

The thing I miss about the Mac was the Res-Edit tool. It gave me no end of enjoyment hacking the Macs at work to show wonderful warning signs/alerts i.e. "This is not A P.C. P.C. you are therfore permitted to curse and swear as much as you like". And many more which I won't go into.

What I didn't like about later Macs was Jobs constantly changing the system and making many of the applications unable to be backward compatible. And then there are the third world tacky finishes. How many early P-Pods became badly scratched and what about the laptops that used to set on fire?

Had it not been for the DTP business I don't think they would have lasted as long as they have.

I notice the 'new' I-pone isn't even 3G and the crippleware isn't that good.

I think the scratching issue was just a lot of people getting picky, not saying the finish was great but things get scratched.

My shuffle is scratched to buggery, as is my laptop, my lovely hadmade acoustic guitar, all my drums, not to mention my footpegs ( :-D ).

I've had more than one PC pour smoke out the top too :(

The res-edit lark sounds like my kinda fun. Im pretty sure there must be a modern alternative. Seems like you know your way round the inside of an OS more than a little too Arch. The one thing I liked about PCs is it certainly was easier to customise both the software and hardware to get best performance. Its not such an issue with the blazing power of new Macs tho so I don't miss it.

W

ps. lets see what happens with the iphone when it finally gets made and on the shelves. I think (hope) it will be a flop and Jobbs will have to re-evaluate the company direction to concentrate on what they do best, but what do i know, I'm a musician!!

I have been a Mac user since the '80s, starting with a MACPlus.
Two years ago, my darling wife (a PC user) decided that it was time for me to upgrade from my much upgraded G3 powered PowerMac 9600 to a new G5.

She bought for me a dual 2.5GHz PowerMac.

This is the model PowerMac with the liquid cooled processors.

3 months later, it is in the shop.....the processors leaked.

The powersupply on these Macs is located in the bottom of the case, so guess where the coolant leaked to.

Apple had to replace the processors, powersupply, mother board and daughter board.

A few months later the powersupply gives out again, but it appeared that they had replaced the PSU with a 450W unit instead of the 650w as is required for the DP models.

When they opened it up, they found that the original coolant leak had corroded the case and had to replace that too.

I believe that the new Mac Pros now have the PSU in the top of the case (where it should be).

Since then I have also had to replace the Sony DVD drive, which is no fault of Apple.

Having said all that, I would not swap my Mac for a PC.

I still spend more time futting around fixing stuff on my wifes PC than it deserves.

Wayne, me and you are going to have to have a cup of tea and sort out this scratching business. I'll bring along some antiquwax and a feather duster - forget the French Maid apron.

Jokes aside. If you can get a tin of Antiquwax down in the smoke get one - it is superb. I use it on the bike. A brilliant lustre and great protection.

Macs in favour of. Oh my God! Windows inners are utter tripe. Give me a Mac anyday. Instead of zillions of files I could chop a mac up in 20 minutes. And to this day I have taught myself to use Mac-type keyboard shortcuts, much much better. I used to love playing around with the fonts.

Cat S - great. Can you play The Narciso Yepes "Romanza" from the film "Jeux Interdit"?

Beautiful.

G'day,

<BR>Geek Corner? If y'all were really geeks then you would be arguing about which LINUX version is the best. Linux is fast and free, and it does everything most people will ever need to do. Some versions can even run without a hard drive!!!

Actually, I hate them all equally. Being bi-lingual (Mac and PC-ish) (and ambi-moustral) over the last twenty years, I've had to learn and relearn and relearn software out the wazoo. They are all the same in the end. Mainly a way for the bosses to get more work outa ya for less money. :hammer:

Untill I googled it this afternoon I didn't know it was called that. I learnt it many years ago. I have recorded a excerpt of me semi murdering the opening passage but couldn't work out how to post it for you. not to worry.

Ill keep eyes open for antique wax cos im not 100% about the autoglym I got. I like the scratches on my guitar, it looks well used.

No, of course not. It's only available in the USA on the Cingular network and they don't offer 3G - only 2.5G on UMTS/EDGE and the new visual voicemail is something unique to the Apple/Cingular deal.

Steve Jobs did say they would offer a 3G version sometime in the future (and if they want to sell the device outside of the USA then 3G is essential) and I would expect to see some exclusive deal done with a Euro mobile telecom such as T-Mobile or Orange.

A lot of commentators seem to think Apple have gone public way too early with this - and it doesn't even have FCC approval yet, never mind the trademark/name issue with Cisco.

In the same way the the iTV device was renamed Apple TV I would expect to see this become the Apple Phone by the summer.

And the biggest announcement made last week was not the Apple TV device or the phone - it was Apple dropping the "Computer" from the name.

I'd love to play with one, just to see if the hype is justified.
