The classic Bonnevilles, well my '79 anyway, doesn't have a metal ridge around the gas tank. It's just a smooth tank. Did some of the older ones have ridges?

I think that the ridge detracts so much from the look of the modern classics.

Why don't they make the tank smooth, like the originals?

My guess is stamping the tanks out in 2 parts and tacking them together at the lip is far cheaper to manufacture than butt joining several pieces and cleaning up the welds. I don't like it either, if I have money left after the carbs, cams, big bore kit, etc, I may use it for a custom alloy tank.
