This bolt breakage is a common issue and AFAIK only happens on the air cooled Bonnevilles, not thruxton nor Scramblers.
Also note the cast foot peg itself has also been reported to fail. I did the bolt upgrade and replaced the pegs with a nice SW Motech type with flat bear trap style foot rest which can be run with their rubber pad.

It's a good practice to check all of the various pegs and such periodically as they do tend to come loose after a while due to natural road vibrations while riding. My clutch lever peg fell off a few months back because that had backed out some at that point. And that is still with me checking things once in a while. The foot pegs are less common in my experience and usually break off more than having the bolts back out. Some of us put blue loctite on after the first time to ensure bolts don't loosen back up as easily. Your fix is creative and quite permanent. Nice job.
