I read that it might be possible to remove the downpipes without removing the oil cooler/radiator.

What are your thoughts on this?

The Haynes Manual says that in order to remove the radiator you have to take the airbox off to disconnect the fan. Sounds extreme. Is it necessary?

Remove the oil cooler for sure .
I cracked mine trying to wrestle my header out without taking it off .
I used foam ear plugs to block the holes on the lines and the cooler .
Be careful to not loose the o-rings on the fittings.

There is no problem with dismounting the rad and easing it forward enough to get the pipes down .

Presumably that involves unscrewing the four bolts (two either side underneath where the pipework joins the bottom of the oil cooler) and the bolts that attach it to the front of the engine.

And you say you just shoved ear plugs into the end of the pipes? Good idea.

Why do Speed Triples need an oil cooler? I don't recall my previous GSXR750 having one and I'm pretty sure my ZX7R hasn't got one.

........and before you say it; I know it is to cool the oil!

Probably not, or if you have a box of oil resistant o-rings in the garage, you probably have plenty of suitable replacements. They are nothing special.
