I have a 98 Trophy 1200 with a few things it needs attention to. One of the problems that I haven't diagnosed is the engine shutting off repeatedly during a cold start. The low oil light will illuminate when it does this and will do it 10 times during a cold start or 3 times. It varies every single time, but I know damn well its making oil pressure and this problem completely goes away once the motor warms up. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on maybe a common problem with a oil pressure sensor simply being the culprit.

Hi Garrett, The oil pressure sensor isn't going to turn the engine off. The side stand sensor will turn the engine off. The little plunger gets pushed in when the side stand goes down. Only a spring pushes it back out and sometimes it gets stuck in the in position.

The oil pressure light always comes on when a motor stalls, or are you saying it comes on while the engine is running, then it stalls?

I assume your 98 is still on carburators, so with choke on you should get a high idle, around 3,000 to 3500 rpm.....do you get this? If not, your choke (which isn't a true choke like in the old days, but that doesn't matter here) isn't working properly. If you are idling low, without choke, at around 1000 rpm at cold start, it is normal that it will stall a few times until the motor warms up.

But it happens when the bike is in neutral on the side stand. It happens while it just sits warming up.

The oil pressure light only comes on after the engine cuts off. Its like spark is instantly cut while the bike is just hanging out on the side stand warming up. It happens again and again until the bike has warmed up. It will happen while the bike is in motion too at lower speeds which is terrifying because of how hard the bike lurches forward.
