Oh, dear...another tale of woe...

Had a call from my dealer earlier today. he had the bike in due to a starting problem (I suspected valve clearings, but with only 5000 km since last check, this was surprising...).

He tells me that one cylinder has no compression, and that the 2nd has only part compression (which I guess would explain starting issues...still pulled OK when on the run, ehough...).

Next thing he says is that I'm now looking at engine rework (typically new bores/cylinders, or maybe the valves are knackered). The cost of this sounds...well, high.

With the experience collected on this page for these bikes - does anyone else have similar tails, or maybe other suggestions for what to look at??

The bike is a 2000 RS with 55000 km (33000 miles) on the clock.

The garage is a Triumph one, but they do most other makes too, and see very few Trumpets through the workshop. Earlier experience is that they are OK for workmanship, but I always go away thinking that they use very long time to do the work... :hammer: :???:

Did he check the valve clearances before the compression check. My Tiger was getting hard to start cold getting close to ready for the 60,000 mile check. Ran fine warm. I had negative clearance on 3 intake valves. Set the valves and all is OK. 0 compression is almost always a valve not closing. Even a piston without rings will usually give you a little pressure.
