So I went to http://cycle-ergo.com/ and compared my current Vulcan against the Thunderbird.

I'm lusting after a new Triumph Thunderbird 1600/1700 to upgrade from my Vulcan 900 Custom (maybe next year), but I've been concerned that it may feel even smaller than my 900 Custom since the base length appears to be shorter.

When I plugged in the numbers, sure enough, my knee angle @ 6'1" & 34" inseam is 113 degrees w/ the Vulcan and 104 degrees with the Triumph. Not what I wanted to see since my Vulcan already feels a bit cramped at times, but what I was fearing.

Now I guess I just need to figure out if I can live with it. Interestingly, another bike I compared, the Triumph America, the bike I almost bought instead of the 900 Custom has a knee angle of 120 degrees! Seems absurd their 900cc bike is larger in build/ergonomics than the 1600/1700 cc Thunderbird, but there it is.

The Victory Vegas, the other choice I've been toying with, is 106 degrees...I really thought it'd be more than the Vulcan, but it's just neck-and-neck w/ the Triumph Thunderbird.

So for those of you 6 feet'ish and above...do you feel cramped when you ride the TBird, or is that 104 degrees somehow deceiving? It would seem like an apples-to-apples comparison with the Vulcan, et al, but maybe I'm missing something...

6'2 here

So far I havent done a long enuff ride to honestly answer your question. (only had the bike for a little over 2 weeks)
My longest ride so far with the stock seat was about 200 miles and a very mixed type of roads. I really didnt feel cramped but did realise I would like to have a second set of pegs to use for extended freeway trips, for me this is to be able to move a bit more and strech as even in a car I have to switch possitions to keep from getting stiff.
With the long haul seat it seemed like I was pushed further forward just a bit but still not cramped.
Go take a test ride! Thats the only way you will know for sure!

6-1 and no problems here.

Put the calculator away and go ride it, it's the only way you'll know for sure.

Three changes that I would make. Handle bars that come back another inch or two. Louder pipes. Mirrors that extend out another inch or two. All of these changes are in the works, other than that...LOVE THE BIRD!!!

6'3" and shrinking

You have to ride it to feel the difference. The angle and lenth with standard pegs is fairly good compared to most. I just switched to floorboards on my storm and it has raised my knees up on the tank some making me wonder if highway pegs are next. I have only Ridden around 300 mile on Texas twisties with both and the board surprised me - not bad. If anything like "paulfun" said you could get a different seat not the touring for sure.

This taller fellow does not feel cramped on the Thunderbird. I am fairly tall (6' 5"), 265 pounds, or if you like 120 kg. That said, I have the SE with the windscreen and foot boards. Ironically, the only limitation I notice is when I put those size 15EE Carolina boots down on the heel/toe shifter. I hope you too are not BigFoot. :) Another caveat is I have the SE model deep dish touring seat and it is VERY comfortable to me. I am older than dirt, and that long haul SE seat is not a limitation to me on the road. Can ride on (in?) that sucker all day long. Not sure about the stock seat, but many folks get a different seat and maybe a windscreen for longer touring. I missed a chance to get an SE that had the big bore kit installed at the dealer, new. Personally glad I got the 1600. For me, and my style of riding, it has plenty of power and torque, and at the low end between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm or so, where it is very useful. No regrets buying the Triumph. Getting 45 mpg on regular and enjoying my riding to no end.

Another member, tho he never posts here anymore is 6'5" and says it is a bit shorter than he'd like, but that it's not enough of an issue to have passed on the Tbird. What is very odd is that guys that size seem to be ok with it and guys 6'2" are totally fine with it, yet at a mere 5'9" it isn't even slightly too big for me. I can sit against the back of the seat and i actually wish i were leaned forward a bit, and my legs aren't stretched at all ! They must have done a exceptional job making this bike a 1 size fits all bike. either that or i'm 6' and don't know it. :D

Im 5'11" and don't feel cramped on the bike at all, but for long rides i have hyway pegs.There are a couple of types of pegs,I got the ones that are fully adjustable so with a bit of time and a couple of spanners you can put your feet where you want them once you get in top gear. It's good to be able to change your foot position on a long ride. You need the front dresser bars for hyway pegs,so there is some cost involved in getting the set up,The triumph web site will give you an idea of look and price.I've also adjusted my handlebars down till they just clear the tank so i'm sitting back more.Hope this helps you lean towards the Tbird.

I'm 6'00" and the ride is fine. I too adjusted the handle bars down until they just clear the tank and it was a noticeable improvement for me. I've ordered the floor boards and will hopefully install next week - that may help as well. Numbers and angles are an indicator, but you really have to ride for an extended period of time to make a fair judgement - too many small factors influence the ride experience.
Great bike, comfortable ride, no complaints here.

I am 5' 11" with a 32" inseam. I am not cramped at all after altering my seat. With the stock seat though I felt like I was leaning back too much, and on longer rides my hips got sore trying to hold myself up against the wind. I also felt the handle bars needed to come back an inch or two. My solution was to have my seat custom modified. I changed the platform angle of the seat so now I feel like I am leaning slightly forward. This alleviated the wind issue, and my hips feel better, and also got my hands closer to the handle bars, and eliminated the need to modify the bars at all. Also the seat is now slightly higher which in turn gave me more leg room, and a better leg angle.

Thanks for the reassurances, everyone. I can't begin to describe how much I want a TBird (hence being a member of this site for almost a year w/ no TBird in the garage...just wanted to soak up info and share the thrill of owning one, if only vicariously), so I was a bit unsettled by the comparison. There are several factors that go into my wanting to upgrade from my '08 Vulcan 900 Custom, and the desire for a more comfortable ride (i.e. legs a bit more extended) is certainly high on that list. Since the TBird is shorter than the Vulcan, I was dismayed and beginning to question if the TBird is truly the bike upgrade I should be focusing on.

I've taken one short test ride and sat on a couple @ the dealership, so was somewhat familiar with the feel, and knew it wasn't going to be a vast improvement over the Vulcan (in fact, I didn't really sense much difference, if any at all), but I hadn't counted on it being even smaller... :-(

I guess I just need to decide how important that length factor is, or if all the other positives of the TBird outweigh that one disappointment. I know I can put highway/crash bars on w/ pegs, or go w/ swingwing pegs (if they make them for the TBird), but I tend to shy away from bars, though I know the first time I drop or dump my bike (35'ish years and counting and no drops!) I'll regret that stance. So I have to assume the way it fits me now is the way it'll fit me for some time to come.

Anyway, appreciate the assurances...sounds like it's perhaps less of an issue that I'd thought. In the end, I suppose a 9 degree difference between the Vulcan and the TBird is much ado about nothing. I do wish, though, the TBird had the 120 degree angle of the America (and, no, not looking for an America...a healthy bump in cc and torque is another primary reason for the upgrade desire).

Various sources report that the average height of a US male is between 5'9" and 5'10" or a little more. So any bike designed to perfectly fit someone over 6' isn't going to be ideal for the broadest demographic segment.
I'd suggest spending some time in the saddle to see if you can reach a comfortable compromise, and I bet that the other favorable features will on balance convince you it's a great bike.
It's a big decision, do what feels right for you.

6'4" here with a 34" inseam. Quite comfy on the T-bird, knees just below my hips. The riding posotion is slightly more "upright" than my Harley [Dyna Super Glide], but quite comfy nonetheless.

I put in about 6 hours riding time on a friend's Vulcan 900 this summer as I was deciding what bike to buy.

I'm over 6'2" and his bike felt fine to me ergonomics wise... except for the horrible numb butt I'd get after about half an hour. It was agonizing! He even had a sheepskin ... I don't know what it was, but that bike just didn't fit me or the seat was off or something. I could have bought a Vulcan, but I would have had to buy an aftermarket seat immediately.

All I can tell you is this: Take a bike for a ride, and if you are at all in tune with what your body is telling you, you'll know if its the right ride for you in about 20 minutes. If you have numb butt, sore hips, pinched shoulder blades they are only going to get worse as you ride. Keep testing bikes until you find one that feels right.

When I test rode the Tbird, I could immediately tell that this was a bike built for me. The stock seat is perfect for me, for some reason.

I've put 2000km on my Thunderbird so far over the past 2 weeks of owning it. One trip was over 500km and I could have easily kept riding. No discomfort, no numb butt, nothing!

I'm not saying that the Thunderbird will feel that way to everyone. The other week I was training at the gym with a friend who is my height, and we both noticed that his hip bones are quite a bit higher than mine. He has really long legs, but we're the same height. Everyone is built a bit different.

All I can say is that for me ... the Triumph Thunderbird is the absolute perfect riding machine.
