And why do you want to do this?

I am moving the reg/rec to behind the left side panel attached to the airbox. Now that I removed the snorkel and EVAP purge valve, there is room there. The reg/rec was originally mounted on the fork. This provided great cooling, but it puts way too much stress on the wiring from the fork moving left and right--that's where mine is now. In the later model years, the reg/rec was relocated to behind the radiator. This seems like a bad spot for cooling as its pretty much the hottest area of the bike. With the reg/reg behind the left side panel, the wiring is way too long, so I need to cut it and re-do the terminals.

I understand why you are wanting to move it, for aesthetics, etc... But if it is the OEM unit I would have a concern it may not get enough cooling air under that side cover.
Just something to think about.
As for your question - there is a little tool and I cannot think of the true name, but it slides in over the wire and index's the lock tab down and the wire pulls out. They look like a tapered stram that is split down the side, and they come in several sizes for the wire gauge/diameter you are using it on.
I am sure someone will come in a give you the proper name of the tool. In a pinch, I made one out of a ball point pin cartridge while doing some work in Japan and did not have the proper tool.

I am somewhat concerned about heat, but on the later model years Triumph put it between the radiator and the engine and between the two headers. That seems like an awfully hot place to put it. Also, it being right above the air intake as I am envisioning means that it actually will get decent air flow despite being covered.

And not exercise my manly instinct to go buy "the proper" tool to use only once ever ... then bury it in the shed somewhere never to be seen again except when looking for something else?
And fifteen years later needing it for the second and last time in your life that you'll ever use it, but not being able to find it, then realizing after a futile search and much foul language that you threw it out two weeks before because you knew that you'd never need it again.
