I fitted an Acumen gear indicator (similar to Datatool) to my '06 ST ABS. Here are the wiring details you need:

Function...................Bike’s wires.............Location
----------....................--------------..............----------
Engine rpm..............Blue/purple..............ECM (A14)
Road speed.............Pink/yellow..............ECM (A21)
Ign live power.........Green/red...............Instruments
Neutral detector......Black/white.............ECM (A19)
Earth.......................Black......................Instruments

The ECM connections are to wires that connect into the smaller of the two ECM plugs. The id in brackets is the plug pin number. The two connections shown as "instruments" are to wires that connect into the instruments behind the dash - accessible by removing the screen. I could send you a description of how I connected my gear indicator with some more details if you like if you give me your email address. I'm at [email protected].

I thought the newer ST's came from Triumph with a gear indicator???

I installed the Acumen on my '02-ST, and I hate it! If you go to 'Product Review Forum' you can read my opinion.

The ST1050 doesn't have a gear indicator though I think the 675 might (?). I'm very pleased with the Acumen on my bike - though I had to sort out the connections because it worked rather like yours when I connected it as advised by Acumen. The connection for rpm is critical - Acumen advised to connect to a coil supply but this produces too noisy a signal that confuses the device. I reconnected to the crankshaft position sensor and it works fine.

I have to ask.

Why do you want one of these on a Sprint?

Not being a smart arse, just seems very unecessary. :)

Gear indicator: Mainly for saving me from trying to get to seventh on the freeway and also knowing when I'm going to go down from 3rd to 2nd in the twisties to prepare myself to do a bit of clutch slip and up-revving during change.

Rev lights: Sounds nice to have one of these things :hammer:

I am learning to read the relative angles between the speedometer and tachometer dials in the various gears. This is one advantage analog instruments have over digital. In the lower gears, I generally know what gear I am in, although I can be one gear off, and using this technique, it is easy to know when you're in top. Try it !! In other words, an electronic gear indicator isn't essential, though it might be nice to have.

I hope the Electronic Gear Indicator Manufacturers Association (EGIMA) doesn't send a hit man after me.

I still haven't bought any new tires yet.
